i am 6"4 and touching 17 stone (i blame ginsters) and am looking to get a full susser for between 1k-1.5k. Most of the time it is for doing fairly gentle trails but then 3/4 times a yr it will be in for some hammer around dalby, coed y brenin and possibly the new ben nevis red route.
Obviously i am not too worried about it being the lightest machine in the world because lets face it - who am i to judge. It needs to be a sturdy machine capable of getting me downhill in one piece.
Any suggestions?

I'm about the same size, as long as you don't go for a real lightweight race bike you'll be fine.0

You ain't that big lol, and most 'trail' type bikes will cope fine with what you suggest ie the Giant trance, Boardman Pro FS and GT Sensor.0

I'm not so sure, it's a bit short, it depends how he's proportioned. I've had an XL GT Avalanche before and still found it uncomfortably short.
I'd go with the XL Pitch suggestion, Specialized make some nice longer bikes. I got on really well with Enduros which is the same geometry more or less.
I'm 6'6", my Meta fits me very well too. Not massively long top tube on paper but the slack seatpost makes up for it, I know a few other taller riders ride them too.0 -
Same top tube length as the Zaskar, 595mm for a medium.0

Which is, the Sanction? I'd guess he's get on better with XL GT at 6'4".
24" on an large Sanction which is what was quoted, most places don't stock XL. Infact I don't recall ever seeing a reduced Sanction or Force in XL?
The new 2010 Avalanche is quoted as having a longer top tube than previous years, 635mm now, used to be 618mm. Maybe they heard my moaning :P I had an old 2006. Quite a steep seat angle too which probably didn't help.
Old Avalanche geometry.
Recent Bikeradar review mentioning the compact geometry too*
Edit: lol ignore the recent comment, it's got J3s on, ancient review. I'm sure there is a newish one kicking about tho :P0 -
Yeah, the Sanction has the same ETT as the zaskars (within a few mm, and 6mm longer in the XL at 640mm) but a slightly slacker seat angle so would be even further reach with the saddle up higher.
The current ETT of the XL Avalanche are the same as in 2008 according to the CRC chart ;-) But head angle has been dropped slightly now - also an XXL model in 2010 with a 645mm ETT!
I had a 2004 Avalanche (well, was my brother's), 'large', and while they are designed to be shorter and more upright, I found it too short too.
Funnily enough the old Idrives I found wer the other way - the large was too large!0 -
Meta 5 XL size is a possibility as someone else said. Really fun at red centre trail routes and excellent on decent rocky routes like in the Lakes, Dales, Scotland etc. however it might be a bt "All Mountain" if you only occasionally do things like that and ride smoother stuff most of the time. You might be better with a shorter travel full-susser.Commencal Meta 5.5.1
