Hi All,

I ride in Shimano spd shoes so I can walk off the bike. I'm looking for some decent wind/waterproof over shoes for the winter. Can anyone recommend a pair, please? Also, do road overshoes work with spd shoes, or do I have to stick to mtb styles?

Many thanks,
Steve

  • why? you'll chew through them with the proper sole.

Get some gore-tex spd shoes, a large expense comparatively speaking, but you'll get a lot more use out of them.

I have some Northwave Celsius boots and they're great at keeping my feet warm, but the water doesn't take long to get in if the roads are properly wet (even with full mudguards and a huge mudflap). Overshoes are better for keeping feet dry IMO and normal shoes dry a hell of a lot quicker that the Northwave boots.

I've been using Endura Road overshoes with mtb shoes for a couple of years and they do get chewed up, but the secret is to take them off if you're goign to be walking far....
    More problems but still living....

I use a pair of Sealskin socks, which do a pretty good job of keeping my feet dry.

I didn't mean I'd be walking long distances in the overshoes - I'd obviously take them off for that.

Gore-tex spds would be good but I can't get them here in HK and I don't want to order shoes online as I have odd shaped feet and have to try them on...

This is unfortunately true in my experience. How bad it is depends on how aggressive the tread pattern on your sole is though, what shoes do you have? Basically the flatter/smoother your sole is the longer they will last. I have Specialized MTB shoes which chew through overshoes but Specialized Sonoma commuting ones that are much less bad. Road shoes are fine either.
  • Get to your Local Bike Shop, bring shoes with you. The Man there will always be helpful & will let you try-on overshoes while you have-on the SDP shoes. I did this & got worthy result. More cyclists should give custom to the LBS
