Forest of Dean newbie with 9 year old?

Hi All

I haven't ridden the FOD before and will be taking my 9 yr old son there this weekend for some fun.

Reading the other FOD posts it seems there are limitless possibilities for routes for the more advanced rider but what is there for me and my boy?

He's a keen biker, can cope with most obstacles in his way but not hardened (yet). For example, I am sure he would enjoy riding the fire roads but would want to break off and head right in to the forest.

Any advice / maps/ guidance would be appreciated.

The Fodca trail is relatively easy and along a fire path (either sides)

it has plent of room aside obstacles if they are deicded against (i dont do all of them yet haha)

Think its closed at the moment for forestry works... but they have a website so give it a try.
www.settingascene.com - MTBing in Wilts and the southwest, join up for info and ride details.
  • Ahhh

How much of the route is closed as their website says "PLEASE NOTE THE COLEFORD LINK OF THE TRAIL WILL BE CLOSED FROM 26 OCTOBER 2009 UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE TO ALLOW FOR EMERGENCY TREE FELLING TO TAKE PLACE"

Does this put my day at risk and if so, what else is around the area for me to take my boy out to?

    Thanks

  • I live in the FOD, and i was riding at the weekend just gone, i will be out tomorrow again for another ride. ive seen the sign about the felling of more trees around cannop but ive not seen anybody doing any work anywhere around there but there is plenty of trails all over the forest area and fire roads too. plenty of trails for you and your boy to explore. :D
