I have this less than lovely bike.4053069125_fbea2722f2_m.jpg

now being silly and looking up hybrids in FCN.

you have:
fast hybrid
MTB skinny
MTB Knobblie
Shopper.

now that bike really isn't a fast hybrid even unloaded it's 50lb/23KG My mountain bike is a lot lot faster,

by shopper did one mean also those big town bike hybrids?

what to people think?

yup very much what my wife has I have that old batter thing which is just the male version, ie has a top tube, but still has pig iron frame etc.
  • If its has a top tube it aint a shopper, nice try to shift some places in fcn though - I like your thinkin :D

i'm not sure about that are we saying women on step though bikes compared to equally heavy slow bikes with men and top tubes?

not saying that a step though isn't a instant mark of a slower bike, but equally a lot of hybrids simply don't fit into the *fast* hybrid section.

No, just that "shopper" as a category is a heavy, utility bike with a step-through frame, whether ridden by a trousered, skirted or kilted individual...

I'm no expert on this, but I reckon you're an "MTB Skinny"- you don't have the full tractor-tyre cum suspension paraphenalia of a knobby, but neither do you have the lightweight, narrow-tyre zippyness of a "fast hybrid".

I don't know where a Pashley comes in, probably up there somewhere with the wicker-basket folks...

I'm pretty sure I'd be impressed/embarrassed if you overtook me, which means you must be higher than a 9 (!). If I take a rough punt on some of the modifiers I reckon you'd be somewhere about 13....

    Cheers,

    edit: added FCN calc.

yup 13 at least until movember is over any way. probably about right as the shopper pushes the bike way into silly numbers.
  • Is a hybrid not a 700cc bike whatever the width and knobblyness of tyres? They've added fast as a prefix for fun :D

So if you have a mtb frame with 26 inch slickish tyres that's what you are...

Leaving aside the typo, which puts a 700cc bike as something with a pretty big engine...

No- hybrids can be 26" or 700c- a 29er is a 700c Mountain bike which could easily have the whole bouncy spring stuff and 3" Knobbies.

It's just a catch-all term for something between an chunky off-roader and a lightweight roadie, with flat bars to appeal to the inexperienced.

Where "fast-hybrid" becomes "flat-bar road bike" I'm not sure, though from an SCR point of view they are both going to be starting at a base FCN of 7....

    Cheers,
    W.

PS This is all pretty academic for me... There are only about three or four other cyclists on my route and we rarely hit the road at the same time. Two of them are low FCN roadies who leave me for dead and the others are into double figures and no real challenge....
  • Well not that I like to be wrong... but wiki quotes :)
In general, hybrids use the mountain bike's triple crank, together with the latter's handlebars giving a more upright posture than road bicycles. They also usually use one of the kinds of brakes used on mountain bikes, namely linear pull, or disc. From the road bicycle they take the 700C (larger) wheel diameter for higher speeds, but use a wider rim and tire for increased strength.

And we all know wiki is correct... (ignore the last paragraph on the wiki page: comfort bikes...)

Because going by your definition a slick mtb IS a fast hybrid... Frame geometry as well surely for the diff between hybrid and flat bar roadie?

Anyway for SCR I was going with hybrid = 700C mtb frame style, slick mtb, knobbly mtb (front sus allowed) and full sus is catered for later on the list. If you have a full sus 29er tyres that are slick - you're just odd.

Drop bars or not - its the frame geometry and stem angle that determine your roadie status surely?

  • Other than when I am sat on it wouldn't my Dew Drop be classed as a Fast Hybrid?

Again pretty academic as I generally only see fit roadies, and they are generally going in the other direction.

Fair enough- Sheldon (RIP) reckons most hybrids are 700c, too.

    I guess. I think we're over-analysing!! :-)
