MTB race questions

I have been persuaded to enter the Merrell Mudman race in a couple of weeks and have a couple of questions as I have never done anything like this!
I am feeling fairly confident about the run but I hardly ride these days so nervous about the bike ride. Here goes with the questions...
1. The race consists of a 7.5lm run, 15km ride and 7.5km run in that order. Do people think I should wear cycling shoes with SPD clips for the bike ride or should I use flat pedals and ride in my running shoes? I would have to change shoes twice if I did this so wondering if I would lose too much time...
2. I am pretty useless when it comes to repairing punctures so thinking of buying a sealant spray. What's the verdict on these? If I puncture will it be enough to see me home? Do they tend to need additional inflation? And can anyone recommend a product?
many thanks in advance
Fergus

ride in running shoes to save time, SPD's wont save you as much time as it would take to to change shoes.
yeah get one of those emergency gas canisters with puncture repair foam in it to save time, its will ruin the tube but will get you to the finish0 -
I've done a few events and have never suffered a flat while partaking in an event. My flats are usually limited to recreational rides *grrr*
Get some tire liners to prevent punctures. Panaracer do a good Kevlar version, they carry an ever so slight weight penalty, but it beats a trackside repair. Link: Click me0 -
Get your tyres set up tubeless, can be done very cheaply.
ride in running shoes assuming not spikes.0 -
why not ut some stans or joes sealent in your tubes. i do this i not had a puncture on my hardtail for over a year,, but be warned if you pinch flat (snakebite) then the sealent wont work and it's messy i found this out in whistler when i exploded my front tube on a rock a nice two inch gash in the tube my wheel and tyre and legs forks and frame looked like a randy elephant had made love to them....www.bearbackbiking.com
