Any issues with using Presta Tubes on my 26" MTB wheel?

Hi All

My cheap Halfords 1.95" MTB tyres are coming to the end of their life. I've had 5 punctures in the back tyre over the past 10 weeks as well so thought it time to get something decent.

I only use my MTB for road commuting actually so it seems a bit pointless having 1.95" knobbly tyres.

I'm going for either 1.5" Continental City Contact or 1.6" Continental Sport Contact.

They come with free tubes but they are Presta and I've only ever use Schrader

Question being... are there any issues or problems with using Presta Valves on 26" MTB rims? I never thought to even ask but someone has mentioned I may have problems with the hole in the rim being too large which can lead to the tube tearing at the base of the valve.

Any thoughts? I don't really want to risk aggro just for the sake of feeling smart because I got free tubes with the new tyres.

  • I have always stayed away from presta valves. Main reasons are I find it hard from some pumps to get air in so have to carry just incase the converter which I screw tightly to the value anyway...

For these reason I just use schrader values even though I find them more leaky at high pressures, just mean checking tyres more often but not a problem I you have a decent track pump.

Presta valves will require to to reduce the hole size - just a plastic insert from LBS should work...

Using presta tubes on a schrader valve wheel can lead to problems. As you say the hole is bigger so this allows the tube to move and be stretched which can lead to tears in the tube.

My friend had a rubber washer thing that he used on his wheels as was fine for him no problems but no idea where you get one from.

maybe ask the shop if you can swap them? Also check your pump is compatible with presta too.
  • Thanks guy's. I might ask Halfords for a favour and see if they'll do a part exchange or something on the Presta tubes. I can't see it worth the risk of trying to use these tubes really.

    Thanks for the advice.
