Converting to rapid rise

I will admit to being flakey on rapid rise......

My commuter runs 1x9 and is hard to get moving in the morning with 4:1 drive (44:11) and I have to shift, lift wheel and spin the cranks before getting on (I allways leave the cable untensioned when not in use) - PITA

As I understand it rapid rise is spring tensioned to 1st not 9th so I could jump on and spin up.

Currently have an XT shadow rear mech and Deore shifter (Conveniantly having no numbers just the red marker moving across the window), will I need to change the shifter if I fit an RR rear mech, as far as I can make out the answer is no?

no need to change. no real need to leave the mech in the small cog.

and your trigger levers will do the opposite.

Thanks Nick, realised the levers would do the opposite!

Does that mean the doom and gloom I've been told about cable stretch from leaving the mech 'tensioned' isn't true?

I don't think it's true, I rarely leave my mechs in the home position, usually try and leave them in a suitable ratio for starting on the flat, middle ring, middle of the cassette. I haven't had any problems with cable stretch. If you do just adjust them.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

if i was leaving the bike for a year maybe.

but the cost of a new mech verses a bit of maintenance?

    its a no brainer.

most cables only stretch in the first weeks of use anyway.

OK I shall forget the doomsayer who first drummed it into me 27 years ago when he helped me convert my Raleigh Hustler from 3sp SA to 5speed derailleur then! - heady times, I could then cycle up from the village instead of having to push the 1/3 hill!

27 years ago the cables were not quite the same as now.
