Buy a whole bike. Merlin Malt 1's are good value.
BTW your not going to get imho something thats good at XC and downhill it just does not happen. Is what you really want a strong xc bike?0 -
Almost always better value to buy a complete bike.
The Carrera Fury would top my list for what you describe, or GT Aggressor XC1.0 -
will strugle a little for £600, but sounds like you want a 5" hardtail if you want lite DH, though a decent 4" hardtail will let you get down most red stuff with sore arms anyway

Are some good off the shelf bikles in that price range though, shop around, missed most of the 2009 sale bikes though, may be a few sale after xmas though if you can wait. If not these are aboout the best around at the mo

I think it boils down to buing a new bike for better spec or building one more for the enjoyment of it
this frame is cheap, not too heavy and should be pretty strong
