Bike shoes- Mountain and Road

Hello,can someone tell me the differance between SPD shoes used for a mountain bike and a road bike???Is it something to do with the cleats???Thanks,Micky

    mtb have a tread on their sole

    roadies are smooth

    mtb take the 2-bolt spud/eggbeater/small metal cleats

    top end roadies take the 3-bolt plastic cleats (SPD-SL, Look etc.) and some also take the 2-bolt type aswell.

    mtb are slightly heavier too, if that's important

    some say the roadies are stiffer too but I haven't really noticed that myself.
