I have a Specialized Hardrock Pro Disc 2009.
I love it but it dies alot. (Crushed rear hub, snapped chain, broke rear cassette)

I have a budget of £700.

Can I get a superior off-road bike, and retire my Hardrock to the commute?

Yes but the Hrock pro is not a bad machine, and a new wheel and bits will get you going again.

upgrade if you like the bike.........

  • K so there was a little more to my story I should have posted I guess.

I have fixed my bike up each time it has failed but - but I am commuting with it to - so the reliability is important to me.

So I kinda want 2 bikes - one for work and one for fun. But I need to know if my budget is enough to get a superior off-road spec.

If the answer is yes, can you suggest a bike? I like the look of the Talon 1 so far.
  • Buy a £300 hybrid for the commute to work (something practical, don't get carried away) and fix your hardrock. Saves killing your MTB which is essentially a toy, a specialised (no pun intended) off road machine. You'll also get to work quicker. Like driving a D reg Nova for the commute and saving the Ferrari for the weekend.

    I'd suggest something like this

And you probably wont get much more bike than you have for £700 in these post credit crunch days
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

That Kona - I do really like!

It is a good solution, buy a commuter and upgrade the MTB.

  • I think you guys might have shown me the path.

I also found out that I can get a few extra parts when I buy this bike, on the cyclescheme! So I can buy new bits for my Hardrock when I get the hybrid. Muahahaha.

Thanks guys, I think I might go down this route!
