Campagnolo Athena 11 Speed

Hi
Can anyone help me with this?
I am thinking of upgrading to 11 speed and was planning to buy and fit the front and rear gear mechs first - before splashing out on the 11 speed cassette and Ergolevers
But the spec for the Campag Athena rear mech on the High-on-Bikes website says “designed for use on 11 Speed ONLY”
I can’t think of any reason why the new mech wouldn’t work with my current 10 speed Ergos – am I missing something?
Cheers,
Justin

Cassette spacing? 11 speed in the same gap as 10 your levers dictate how much cable is pulled. Someone will now pop up and say they've tried it and it's OKNeil

Exactly, I’m only talking about changing the rear and front mechs here - I’ll do the cassette and Ergolevers together ...so the cassette spacing shouldn’t be an issue should it?0

The only thing I could possibly think of is the width of the mech cage with a 10 spd chain but I cant see it being that fine a toleranceNeil

Yes, that must be it then. Good thinking0

There is no 10 speed chain that will work worth a damn on an 11 speed drivetrain. Right now, it's Campy or nothing.
I've measured the total cable pull and found it to be 1.03 inch or .010-.020 more than the old 10 speed.
I know for a fact that the old 10 speed RD comes up short on travel, hooked to an 11 speed shifter, but the opposite setup with a slight amount of over travel seems to work OK. If you need a new RD, but don't want to move on to 11 speed, it should be workable.
An 11 speed shifter will NOT shift a 10 speed RD across 10 cogs. The pull after 9 shifts is .9 inch and you need 1.01-1.02.
The bottom line is if you want to switch to 11 speed, buy all the parts and move on. The only exception I've found is a 2008 QS FD works fine with the new shifters, and 10 or 11 speed chains. Remember that the new shifters come in 10 speed (Centaur & Veloce) and 11 speed models. 10 speed Campy cranks also work fine and so do most others, from the reports.
