Why haven't we ever seen any interviews with those responsible for creating such products and selling them for such OVER EXORBORANT PRICES ...
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Light ... 360040339/
Who in there fkin right mind would pay 800 quid for that piece of EQ ...and pair of wheels also on the same site for just under 4 grand
It's time the mags hounded those people ... and ask them why is it really justified

why?
what has a Road mech got to do with the prices of fish?
some roadies buy them."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

If you are the sort of person with 0% bodyfat, weighing 8stone dripping wet and every gram lost off your bike means that extra 0.01 of a second that could potentially be the difference between winning a big race and not winning, The kind of person who rides with a support crew and has sponsors. The kind of person who considers cycling to be more of a career than a hobby, then you'd have no problem paying £4k for a wheelset and £700 for a spanky rear mech.
If you are properly minted and just want to build the lightest bike you can, because you can, then you'd have no problem paying £4k for a wheelset and £700 for a rear mech.
Don't see why it's a problem? If you've not got £700, go buy an ultegra mech for £40. It's not like you are being forced into paying over the odds for stuff.
If you want the best products, you have to pay the highest prices (generally speaking). This is not a new concept to the world. Get over it.0 -
if people want to pay these prices then they are very welcome to
some people will pay over the odds just because its expensive
they somehow think that the more they spend then they will be better, its good marketing
the pleasure is to out ride these people with a cheap bike and watch the suffering on their face after they have spent the last half an hour telling you how great their bike and equipement is and how many seconds they are faster by over 50km by fitting a set of £2000 wheels
all the gear but no ideas!0 -
Geez, in the UK we love a moan don't we?
If we can't buy exotic stuff it's because the world is against us and no-one cares about us in the UK....
Then when we can buy the stuff, we moan like buggery because it's too expensive....
Then when we get it, we make excuses about how the bike wasn't setup correctly by the bike shop....
Buy what you want, ride how you like and enjoy it...or is that not British enough?0 -
Whoaaa £799 for a rear mech
That's £299 more than I paid for my roadbike
It's a purdy looking thing for sure, but £799
£799
I'd want some Haribos if I ordered that bad boy
£799

I would, if I had a £6000+ bike. I'm currently saving. I have £5 so far0 -
Why the jealousy magazines are going to be bl**dy boring if they dont have pictures and articles about expensive bikes and parts. No one would buy a car magazine if it was only about Ford Fiestas people want to read about Ferraris.Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0

Why get so worked up about this?
If people didnt buy them they wouldnt exist, its as simple as that. Some people are obviously willing to spend a very large amount of money to save a few grams, good for them, its their money they can do what they want with it.Orange Crush 2010
Trek 1.5c0 -
Mountain biking is hardly the first thing to have very expensive high end kit, at least with this there a quantifiable weight difference here. Take HiFi for exmple, someone might spend that much on a power cable which a lot of people argue makes no quantifiable difference!Santa Cruz Chameleon

Jeez mate, you need to take a chill pill. 8)
All of your threads are making me feel miserable, so full of hate! Incidentally, the two i've looked at most recently are also focussed around money.
Some people have lots of it, some people do not. Some spend lots, some do not. I thought we had covered this in your other thread?
£800 to some people on a rear mech is absurd, to others it is reasonable for the reward of being able to take another 0.1secs off your 1 mile time.
What do we want?
COMMUNISIM FOR MOUNTAIN BIKERS!
When do we want it?
NOW!

Need to switch your spell checker on, EXORBORANT is not a word.
I wouldn't go and spend that much on a mech, even if it's a sexy little number.
But when your on the top of your game and every bit counts then I can see the why.
Why you are going on about it I haven't a clue.
Must be suffering from Meldrew syndrome. Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"0 -
That lightweight stuff is insane...
But if some "more money than sense" fool whats to drop that sorta coin to save a few grams, or more likely try to impress their friends, let them carry on.
Now, I wouldn't go so far as to say the name is the most expensive part of their stuff but...
Brake pads £40
Wheel bag £70
Spandex roadie suit thing and gloves £176
Skewers £85
Sorry, but all you're getting over above mainstream stuff is posing points.
I'm not going to comments on their derailers and wheels, I know nothing about roadie stuff, I imagine they're good. But I bet Shimano spend more on paperclips that lightweight do on R&D, there's no economies of scale with such a tiny company.0 -
I use Fox 40's as paperweights.
I also have a rule that I only use a set of tyres for one ride, then I bin them. Don't see the point in using the same set again once they are dirty. Like wearing the same pair of pants again.
I might start buying a new bike every ride instead, saves me having to pay my slaves to change tyres every weekend.0 -
Colintrav - If you really want to have a rant about prices, try contacting a few drug companies and ask them why a course of anti-cancer drugs cost 25 grand, instead of a reasonable £800 for a rear mech. If you think that's bad, try contacting Crescent Suzuki and ask for a Yoshimura race kit head gasket for a GSX-R1000 K9. !0

LOL... or visit the russ andrews website and ask for an 8m length of THIS speaker cable
http://www.russandrews.com/product.asp? ... YNNDIUKGVC
A mere piffle at £12,000.
Or better still some cables I saw advertised at a local HiFi show that were £50K for 2 x 5m runs.
Bikes is for nowt mate.

or loses interest.
He's probably working on the next thread, moaning about the price of oil or something...Not really active0 -
I look at this way.
The person who buys that sort of equipment knows exactly, 100%, without doubt, that that is what they want. No messing about, asking questions on forums or trying to save a few quid by searching the net for deals or voucher codes.
If you consider your professional hourly wage, work that back into the hours spent scouring obscure websites, local bike stores and HM Customs & Excise information, I'm will to bet that a fair few of us have got some very expensive kit that is never, ever, going to be worth the time and effort expended before we finally put our hand in our pocket and brought the damn thing.
I wish I could role with my cash like that because to me, my time is far more important.0 -
Hercule Q wrote:i've just bought 5 of them to use as paperweights
I dont think they would be very good paperweights seeing how light they are  Maybe buy a new one every time one floats off ?0 -
Only in shelter and slops from the paid servants table, at least that's all mine get.
120g, that would be great on my commuter.....
