Got my new Croix de Fer through Cyclescheme yesterday. Fitted mudguards, rack and 28mm Vittoria Randonneurs to convert from a cyclocross bike into a commuter suitable for country lanes.
Fist rides today and what a difference to my old Saracen. Much smoother ride despite having a rigid steel fork and easy pedalling. Both rides today were in the rain and the disc brakes have proved their power in wet conditions with an easy downhill stop from about 35mph.
The riding position is much less extreme than my Kinetic One road bike and seems really comfy with a good choice of hand positions.
Anyone else similarly enthusiastic?
Cheers, Mark
Genesis Croix de Fer - my new commuting mount
Saracen Hytrail - the workhorse - now pensioned off
Kinetic-One FK1 roadie - the fast one - hairy legs though!
Cannondale Jekyll Lefty MTB - the muddy one which keeps tipping me into gorse bushes!

I don't ride on, but certainly a fan - nice bike!
  • Do you know which mudguards were fitted?

It's a right pain trying to fit them round the disk brakes.

Just seen it on the front page, lovely lovely!

When my next cyclescheme comes up I may be joining you, they look the absolute nuts for commuting.

I can't remember the brand of the mudguards, but it was one of the common types. the rear one fitted fine, but I had to bend the left upper stay around the caliper. Took about 10 minutes.
I have just seen it on the front page. mine had natural brown bar tape to complement the saddle.
As I said earlier, the ride is lovely. I can't see how the chome-molybdenum fork works though. I have only used this material in tractor driveshafts before - an application where you definately don't want any flex!!

+1 looks very pretty, shame I've got nearly a year to wait. would even give it a go on drop bars

    I like genesis bikes.
  • markp2 - if you've the time (or inclination) could you possibly take a close up photo of how you bent the stays round the caliper?

    Ta very much

Just read the review and this looks like a really good bike. How good is the braking performance? Do you find you lock up the wheels often? I really like the Boardman CX but this doesn't have disc brakes, not sure if it's much of an issue though!

No lock ups yet. The braking seems to be much more progressive than with calipers. I

I will take a photo of the mudguard stays if I get a moment.

I had a go on one at a LBS and it seemed a good bike for commuting.

The only reservation I'd have is the cromo frame and how it would stand up to being rained on for years. I had a cromo frame rust through and break ysee, though it was a MTB and got very very wet at times (who put that river there?).
Today is a good day to ride
