Planning a trip next summer with my HT, a trailer, camping gear and an eye to ride around some great trails at various points (without the trailer). I have a mind to head around France and possibly Spain but could be tempted East toward Germany and Austria. The trip is probably to be as long as I have money for (2 months plus) with the possibility of stopping in Morzine and working for a bit. Setting off in mid May.

My current possible stop points are:

Pyrenees - Southern/Med end
Granada/Sierra Nevada Mtns
Auverne
Ventoux
Les Arcs
Alpe D'Huez
Morzine (visiting friends)
Black Forest
Salkamersgut (spelling?!)

France is full of good VTT tracks and has a rich local racing heritage, there must be loads of places to ride that I dont know plus loads of tracks I can use for touring that are off road.

Hit me with some ideas people.

  • There's a great red run from Superbagneres to Luchon in the pyrenees (14k dropping 1200 metres), telecabine uplift costs 8 euros for 1 trip. Did this one last summer, there also a new skills park at the top but the waymarking is the usual French hit and miss system. Good bike shop in Luchon does bike hire too.
On Mt. Ventoux there's a great 20k red route around the top starting from Mt.Serein, sketch map available from the tourist info office in Bedoin where there is also two bike shops (expensive) but again the waymarking leaves a lot to be desired. Did this route two years ago so maybe the markings better now but could be worse as the get some really severe weather up there. Good luck and hope you enjoy your hols.
You know you've been working on the bike too long when it falls over and you don't care!
  • Try Ste Foy Tarentaise, it is located between Val d'Isere and Bourg St Maurice with Les Arcs close by. If you feel the need to visit Italy it is within an hours bike ride away.

    You will not be disappointed.

Been to Les Arc last 2 x summers with mates, all on hard tails.

Great riding and lots of marked routes. We rode them all (well all except the cross country route - 32km's of up and down) and they're all perfectly manageable.

Black 8, 10km's with a 810m descent, lovely. - your mission should you choose to accept is to beat the funiculaire back to the bottom.

    Lots of back country too.

And last year they added a bike park for some additional fun.
