Long travel HT for under a grand?

I'm hoping to recieve a nice £1000 cycle to work voucher soon, and ideally would like to use it to purchase a long travel hardtail, with a 140mm fork. I already have a 100mm XC HT that I will only use for commuting on roads once I get my new MTB...
I am thinking this would also enable me to purchase a second hand FS frame with around 140mm of rear travel one day, when I am ready to make the move to FS, and transfer all the kit and forks to the new frame (perhaps.. just an idea..)
*dreaming of a yeti 575 or santa cruz Nomad or something*
So I am wondering on which bikes I can put in my shortlist of "long travel hardtails for under a grand"
My requirements:-
-Decent forks and wheels, so I dont have to upgrade these later.. would love fox floats or some rs revs or pikes or something?
-Not so bothered about mechs, shifters and brakes being super-amazing as I have pretty good ones already
-A good crank would be a bonus
-possibly a 2009 model so I get a discounted model if this is possible on a c2w scheme..
Unfortunately I do not know where I would be able to use my voucher yet either.
So it's a long shot... but any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

never ridden one, but a 140mm Fox fork and cracking spec on this for under £1000

Leisure Lakes have a special model Orange Crush to come in at just under £1000. GT Aggressor Elite from Halfords has an amazing spec too.0

GHill
that crush is pretty stupid because they put more expensive shifters but no where near as good forks0 -

+1 for the Rocky Ridge - very hard to beat that one!0 -

come, on, its perfect!I like bikes and stuff0 -
Nothing wrong with the Recon 351, it is a Revelation with solo air.
But the Agressor is king of the budget here.0 -
that gt is a stand out bike... needs some decent wheels but the best all-round spec.0
-
Wheels are pretty good. Rims a hell of a lot better than the crud on the Orange lol.0
-
Don't rate the formula hubs though.
TBH both sets will need re-tensioning after purchase, and would be an obvious early upgrade for both of them.0 -
I'm having this very same dilemma, but Halfords have been nigh on useless in providing proper specs of the GT, i.e. geometry, and they never have them in store so a ride is out of the question.
With this in mind, I've been looking at the Genesis Altitude 10 - steel frame with 85-130mm Recons, however it is QR and not Maxle unfortunately.

They are the same geo as last years Avalanches.0

it all depends on what you want to use it for before you go full suss, otherwise try and talk the shop into just giving you a fork for the token! as long as your work gets the bill they wont know the difference in names of forks or names of bikes, its worth a go.
i would look at a charge duster mid a specialized stump, rocky ridge, orange p7 pro or a cove stiffee (up to 150mm)
you might also want to look into buying a bike you really want and combining the cycle to work scheme with a finance deal or deposit, this would save you the hassle of moving kit and buying/selling frames later.0 -
anyone that doesnt get the GT for that price needs their head looking at....I like bikes and stuff0

Wow, thanks so much for all the mega quick replies.
The GT looks like an awesome spec, will certainly look further into this one...
Keep em comin'0 -

Saracen Trace 10 -
Forks are OK, but the bike doesn't really offer any morfe than the Aggressor 1.0 which is less than half its price at the minute:

That's why you have the Genesis Abyss 20090 -
 chuff!
thats good for the money, the Zen has better rims and longer travel though?
still for half the money thats pretty good going!
Is the frame better on the Zen2? been eyeballing one for a while now, and the wallet is getting warm in my pocket if you know what I mean? lolUnlike my credit card im currently carrying a low level of interest- Peter Griffin

Hard to sum the frames up - both aren't bad, and are built to take some stick. The new Zen frame looks a bit svelter than the older ones.
I do quite like the older models:

thats sexy,
Ive always liked the zens, I think they hit above there belt and they are a 'proper' british bike...........
debating whether to wack some reba's on my trace 1 or just buy a Zen2.....decisions!Unlike my credit card im currently carrying a low level of interest- Peter Griffin
Saracen Trace 10 -
Zen is designed for more travel than say a Trace.
I was working in a bike shop when the first ever Zens came out way back in 2000 - was £500 with an adjustable travel RST fork. But it had that coreected geometry - I nearly got one!0 -
well if a Zen is good enough for you then its good enough for me lol!
incidently are the rebas travel adjustable? cos my trace can only take 100mm....Unlike my credit card im currently carrying a low level of interest- Peter Griffin
Saracen Trace 10 -
Yes, most are interanlly adjustable to a max of 120mm dwn to 80mm. But check the sepcs carefully.0

I have a Marin Rocky Ridge '06 and its great. Would definately recommend it, especially as the '09, i assume, is even better!0
