This superb achievement has only been achieved by seven people for a total of 11 times.

Fausto Coppi 1949
Fausto Coppi 1952
Jacques Anquetil 1964
Eddy Merckx 1970
Eddy Merckx 1972
Bernard Hinault 1982
Bernard Hinault 1985
Miguel Indurain 1992
Miguel Indurain 1993
Stephen Roche 1987
Marco Pantani 1998

When will it be achieved again and by who?

See Pantani seal his Tour win with an amazing performance under awful conditions.

    (nice edit ;) )

Contador looks like the man to do it, nobody else comes close at the moment
  • Thanks. Amended.

Don't think it will for a while (if at all).

Whilst AC, Andy Schleck & Co continue to battle it out in the TdF, their former rivals will realise they won't be able to match them and put more focus on the Giro.

I can see in the near future riders like Evans, Sastre, perhaps even Levi 'doing a Menchov' and bagging the win.

AC and Co will be so focussed on being at 100% form for the Tour, they are unlikely to really target the Giro, giving the second tier riders a chance at GT success by targeting it instead.
  • I think contador has the fire power to do it.

I don think he will ever try though, which is a pity.

Has Armstrong changed the way riders race?

People don't tend to ride like Merckx did these days. They focus their efforts rather than going for everything.

Roscobob, I think the first guy to do this was actually Lance's old pal Greg LeMond, when he entered the Giro d'Italia only as part of his Tour de France build-up, back in 1989-90, causing quite a stir in Italy.
  • When Indurain was racing the Giro/Tour everyone thought that was the way to go. It's partly fashion, also I think the dates of the Giro make it harder to hold form for both races these days?
  • We may well be able to add Contador 2010 to this list as he said in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport that if he had a good team he could ride the Giro as well as the Tour and win both.

Contador is coming into his prime so surely it would be a missed opportunity if he did not do the Giro? If you ask me, the riders haven't a clue whether the Giro helps or hinders their TDF chances later in summer...every single rider changes his story depending on how his Giro went. Lemond said it was good, then bad, Indurain quit the double after 1994, Leipheimer says it's too hard, now Contador isn't sure. I reckon Evans should ride the Giro
  • I think Contador will do it some point but not until Armstrong has retired i think he will be paranoid about his build up until his gone. Could Schleck to it, the Giro is hard enough for him to drop most everyone but Contador and his going to win the Tour eventually you would think.
Take care of the luxuries and the necessites will take care of themselves.

Basso looked fairly certain in '06 before getting kicked off the tour.

So Contador could be riding. That would be really great. Not sure how Evans would feel though! I'm looking forward to the Giro more than the Tour.

Not sure I see anyone in the Giro with the ability to take the Tour. Possibly 2011 now:

I reckon Contador will go for it if he keeps his current form for the next few years. He's an aggressive rider and he's shown he likes to ride to win rather than keep a low profile and peak for a specific event.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

that's why I am a fan of him he races to win not just one event a year and realises you can have a real place in cycling history if he adds to his palmares.

I think he is prob one of the few who could do the giro - tour double in the same year

Zomegnan has announced Contador will ride Giro 2011 so the Double could certainly be on

He does seem to care about cycling 'history' and what not.

He seems very proud of his wins in all 3 GTs, given the paintjobs on his bike and helmet.

That naturally always makes him more popular with the connoisseurs of the sport.

I doubt the chap who only watches the tour (of which there are many), cares about whether Contador was part of the finale in Liege, or winner of the Giro.

    A little speculation.............

If Alberto is planning next year, does he know who he will be riding for/with?
