Looking for a training/commuter bike (and maybe the odd sportive) for £500ish. Most at that price seem to have the new shimano 2300 groupset - anyone tried this much yet?

I asked in the bike shop and the guy said 2300 was probably the same as the sora/tiagra standard from a few years back (which seemed to work ok back then :) )

i have just brought a spesh allez 16 for £500 & it is very go indeed. It has got the 2300 groupset on it, which is bottom of the range for shimano. I fyou are looking for a sora or even tiagra setups, u may need to buy second hand or maybe try the Btwin sport 2 at decathlon. It has got sora components allround & carbon front & rear. It is priced at £429

Thing is tho, if u r new to the road biking(which i am) u will need a lot more kit to go with it.
with my bike i have brought:
    bike(obviously)
    gloves
    helmet
    spare inner tube
    saddle pack
    repair kit
    lights
    good decent clothing

    Hope this helps you.

Your bloke in bikeshop is right.

2300 is essentially 8sp Sora from a couple of years ago, Sora is now 9sp.

8sp Sora is what you usually got on a £500 bike and it worked fine.
