Hi all,

Having a dilemma with what wheelset to buy for my bike, my price range is £400 to £600 so i'm sure you guys know the selection of wheels which are available to me, so what i'm asking is in your opinion which manufacturer would you go for. I'm 85kg and falling and do alot of road cycling if that is any help.

Shimano Dura Ace WH7850 C24 CL

    Suitable for all activities.

Otherwise get some handbuilt Open Pros with Chris King Hubs.
  • Depends on your groupset and what other wheels you have to choose from/ what riding you want to use them for, but for an all-round set...

    Shimano/SRAM
As above - the DA carbon laminate clinchers or Fulcrum Racing 1 or Racing Zero (which can be had within your budget). The Fulcrums are more sensitive to a side wind and both a little heavier than the DAs.

    Campagnolo
Campagnolo Neutron Ultra - at the lower end of your budget but stiff, about 1500g, comfy and very stable in the wind. Fulcrum Racing 1s or Zeroes with the caveats above.

If you do a lot of faster flat-rides or TTs, Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLs might be worth considering, despite their porkiness!

The Dura Ace wheels are great. I have just replaced Ksyrium Elites with them and the difference is very noticable. They get great reviews from all mags and websites.

I like the hand built idea. H*ll I even want a set of DA's. I would not, however, vote for Chris King hubs. Way to noisy. DA hubs - quiet as a mouse.

The DA Hubs sound soooooo quiet. The Chris Kings make a noice, but it's a cooool noise!

They only sound cool if you think the sound of tyres rubbing on mudguards is cool :? Now Campag hubs sound cool.

WTF? Have you joined this forum just to disagree with everything I say, or are you one of those users who set up a second account to troll?!?

How does a high ratchet count buzz sound like a tyre rubbing on a mudguard?

They sound quite similar to campag IMO...

Well the Pewter coloured hubs I've seen/heard, make it sound like the tyre is rubbing on something, and nothing like my Campag wheels.

    Maybe those tyres were then?

I was fully assured it was the hubs and not the tyres.

Mudguard rubbing sound?! Bell end

I've owned/own both Campag and Chris King hubs.

Campag freehubs are loud because of the 3 or 4 pawls they use, like a Hope hub. An old design with tiny springs and finer mechanical parts.

Chris King and DT Swiss hubs use a star drive that engages instantly, both of my current wheelsets use these, there is a difference and I do believe them to be better.

Check out DT Swiss 240 hubs......

Sounds like a load of boll0cks to me...
  • Mudguard rubbing sound?!

    Definitely.

Or could it have been the Campag wheel rubbing on the mudguard full of mud that was making that sound?

Like the big fella said, complete b0ll0cks!!

How are Hope Hubs thought of in road circles?

I love them on my MTB, saying that i also rather like the Mavic ones I have on my other MTB  Kinda clicky like Hope but not as loud

I have them on my Gary Fisher, I've had Hope hubs on previous mountain bikes over the last 10 years. I do rate them, the user serviceability and support Hope offer should make them a serious consideration for the road.

Maybe they don't seem as popular as other choices because they are a non groupset component or not a weight weenie choice?!

I have them on my MTB too, love 'em!
  • I have Hope hubs built onto DT Swiss rims, which I use on my training/winter bike; about 1500g a pair, bulletproof and very responsive. The Hopes also have a very cool (and loud) freewheel noise :D
