Alfine hub with drop bars

Hi,
Just finished building up my old winter bike, i had been using flat bars to use the Alfine shifters last year. This year i wanted to go back to drop bars, problem was the shifters won't fit. I spoke to Big Al at Wheelcraft (my LBS) near Glasgow, he reckoned we could modify the shifter to use on drop bars. Basically we just reamed the clamp out little by little until it was a tight fit then prised the clamp open a bit to work it onto the bars, and that was it! Fitted the pinch bolt and we were good to go. Looks great and i get to keep my drops.
Jim.

I'm still intending to modify the shifter ring/fabricate a new shifter rign on a Campag Ergoshifter to operate an internal gear hub.
Just need to get myself one...0 -

have you got enough gear range?
I'm no speed merchant but can happily out run my alfine on a chunkier sit up and beg.
Looks like your front cog is a touch toothier than mine0 -
Looks like about a 53/55 tooth front (counted between 2 bolts and multiplied by 5 lol) so depending on the rear gear, it should be OK, my new 1x9 commuter (full details in a post once I have pics!) goes from 46/11 to 46/32 which is more than I need for my commute which include some steepish hills!
What I love about commuting bikes is they are all so personal, there are very few rights or wrongs, and its all about building what works for that person on their commute with their needs.
I have cowpats and potholes and cambered edges into ditches, so no 1" road tyres for me thank you!

+1 ! Lovely...
What's the frame, Shrekster? I like the style of that fork crown and it all looks very well stuck together!
Cheers,

I can't remember exactly what size the front chain ring is, i think it may be 39 teeth, all i did was remove the large chain ring from my old Sora chain set. The gearing is just about spot on for me, i can just nudge 30mph in top gear going down hill spinning like mad! and first gear is low enough to tackle the bigger hills on my commute.
I don't know what the frame is, i bought it second hand a few years ago for £40 and have been using it since. I got it powder coated earlier this year as it was looking a bit tatty, apart from the wheels everything else is secondhand.
fury21- i wish you hadn't shown me those levers as i might have to get a set!
bu**er, more money.

Sounds like you have ~38t chainring and ~19t sprocket, going on the 30mph super-spin mode, which is what my Pylon8 has!
I contemplated getting a smaller sprocket for a while, for a high gear closer to 90 gear inches, but I do seem to be using my current low gear (~27) more often recently to tackle some of my local hill challenges.================

Counting teeth that's at least a 50t wheel......much more than 30-something unless you've changed it since the photo's!

Had a look, it's has 49+20 tooth chain wheels(dunno why i thought it was 39?? doh!). I remember i put the large chain wheel from the chain set and bolted it on the inside of the crank to get the chain line correct, i just got lucky as the gearing is pretty much spot on.
