    "Best wheelset for what"
    Myself I am looking at Open Pro rims on a good hub.
    Reasoning - strong - reasonable weight - for roughish roads.
    Wheels once on I can forget about for a few years

  • Obviously, you won't find an Open Pro equivalent from Lightweight or Lew. So, the typer of riding is implied. The question is in respect to high-end wheels, light, stiff and aero. All rounder road race for climbing and flat.

    Wheel manufacturer Lew Racing was showing its dramatically light new boron and carbon fiber Pro VT-1 tubular road wheels at Interbike.

    Standard versions of the Pro VT-1 wheels weigh no more than 880g and per pair and cost USD6,000 but for ultimate gram-chasing Lew racing offers a custom build service that has so far built wheels down as light as 737g/pair. The company believes a 700g pair is possible for the right rider (likely a petite female!) A set of custom Pro VT-1s costs USD15,000.

    Yes, you read that right. Fifteen. Thousand. Dollars.

    LEW Racing doesn't exist anymore.

    Paul (?) Lew works for Reynolds now.

    Extralite do a set of Edge rims on their own hubs with a claimed weight of 790g. By all acocunts these are perfectly rideable, not some showpiece and at €1,999 look cheap in comparison to some of the others on your list :D

    Bit of a strange poll question really cos there's different wheels for different tasks in there. You can't really compare Campag Bora to Lightweights cos they have totally different characteristics ie. climbing, descending etc.

    Are you asking for the best all-round wheelset? And also, you have only said Zipp. Well which model? And the same for Mavic. Which model? Same goes for Lightweight. Bit more clarification please ......

    FWIW Lew went bust and now works for Reynolds, so suggest you modify your list. If you go over to Weight Weenies you'll already find an informed debate - Edge Composites are popular with the guys on there.
    Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Come on guys; how is this question vague? If wheels like Lightweight, Bora and Lew are among the options, I am obviously not referring to the Zipp 808 or the Mavic Open Pro. Hence, the focus here has to be on (specially if you ready the previous posts) high end, light and aero racing wheels for flats and climbs. Btw. Lew went bust but you can still find it for sale.

    But which is the biggest priority - light for climbs or aero for flats? Or do you actually mean best all rounder?

  • If you want stiff - Mavic CCU or Lightweight, if you want aero Zipp. Personally I go for the stiffer wheel, over the less stiff more aero wheel.
