I'm considering getting a pair of dhb bib tights from Wiggle now that we're deep into autumn. I can't decide whether to go the whole hog and get a pair of the Merstons, or whether it might be a bit more flexible to get a pair of the Earnleys, then layer up with something like a pair of Ron Hills tracksters on the coldest days.

Anyone got any experience of the Earnleys? Are the warm enough for a day like today - temparature about 8 degrees C?

My legs are the last bit to get cold.
I am wrapped up top half, and in bib shorts.

If in doubt, buy shorts and leg warmers.

I have a pair of Earnley shorts and knee warmers. At 8 degrees I am OK, at 6 degrees my arse and thighs are pretty damn cold (5.30am commute). I have worn this combo with some summer tights at 5 degrees and my legs were comfy.

I had a pair of Merstons recently, the '09 ones and the ankle zips were cack - dodgey generally as per 180 plus reviews on Wiggle, a mate has had a pair of '09 Merstons and the stitching has split on the back, but he is fat  .

I then got a pair of 2010 Merstons and the zips are changed totally and don't undo on their own now.

For warmth, the Merstons are way warmer but still start to feel a bit chilly at about 2 degrees.

I guess it depends on what temps you will ride at this winter, but I think the times you can ride in Earnley tights alone will be limited, but the times you could ride in Merstons alone will be plenty. I would get the latter and then wear tights with them when it goes close to zero.
  • I've got Earnley 3/4 bibs and 2909 Merstons full length. Earnleys are thinner and not warm enough for me this time of year so have been wearing the Merstons recently which are fine. Got another pair of Merstons on order (2010) so I can do a wash every other day.

Go for the Merstons, you'll be happy.
