A frined of mine is switching to 9 speed because all his drivetrain is buggered,
except the cranks, so he want's to know for sure:
Q1: Will 3.0 front mech work with 9 speed chain?
Sram says 8 speed, but is it that stupid, just thinner chain and won't
be able to change on the cranks correctly?
Q2: Will X4 rear mech work with 9 speed chain and shifters, X5 or X7?
Sram says 8 speed, but is it that stupid, I mean it's the shifters that pull the
amount of cable, and the rear mech high to low movement is the same.

no problems there."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Yes and yes.
To an extent. The rear mech should be fine, but the front will not be as precise. Or may take more fine tuning. Most don't notice much different though.
Why doesn't he stick to 8 speed? So good deals about on the stuff (8 speed deore cassette £11, chains £6 eyc)0 -
supersonic, I think you forgot where I live for a moment.
The reason why he's going 9 speed is because he found a bargain
from a local guy on a second hand shifters X7, two months used.
So, he'll be buying new:
Chain Sram PC971
Cassete Sram PG950
Rear mech Sram X4
Front mech Sram 3.0
-15% discount
Btw, thank you for your confirmation.
EDIT
All will cost him under £60 with the X7 shifters.
Also the PG950 is just £15, unlike CRC where is £32. :shock:0
