Upgrading Hayes Sole Brakes

Hi all

I'm not overly impressed by the performance of the Hayes Sole brakes on my GT Avalanche, so looking to get something with a bit more bite.

Anybody got any opinions on the Hayes Stroker Ryde V8 with 203mm discs, I've seen these for £100 which seems pretty good.

Any other recommendations give a budget of £150 absolute tops - but as always cheaper would be better

Cheers

I've got the strokers and they have been excellent

even the lbs was impressed with them
  • I personally have had a good experience with Hayes, but people here seem to think they are of lower quality, and I can see where they're coming from (it just has never been a problem for me).

I probably would have gone for a set of Stroker Trails myself, but I managed to get a used set of Formula ORO K18s for less than 120 quid with rotors etc. all ready to go, and these are a quality piece of kit.

If buying new, then for the money you can't go too wrong with the strokers.

I would seriously consider getting some Avid BB7 brakes. Have fitted these to my hardtail which I have recently built up. I cannot believe how good they are :D Have better modulation and easily more power than the Hayes Stroker Trails I have on my full suss bike

Cheaper than hydraulic brakes, easier to set up and (I expect) they will be easier to maintain.

    Check out the reviews.......

  • mechanicals require more maintenance and are harder to set up than hydros.

However the maintenance is less complicated.
