Adjusting Hayes MX4 cable disc brakes

Hi

Having bed in my Kona Fire Mountain Deluxe with Hayes MX4 cable brakes I want to adjust the disc brakes so that they 'bite' earlier when I hit the levers.

I've dialled out the levers to the maximum and still they're a bit too soft for my liking, probably because the cables have now stretched. I'm not sure how I now adjust the brake - is it a case of simply pulling more cable through the actual brake caliper?

Its a stupid question with probably a simple answer...but if anyone can help that would be grand.

Stu

PS About to do up a 1997 Rockhopper so will probably be postng lots more how to's soon!!

wind the cable adjust all the way back in, undo the pinch bolt on the caliper a bit, pul the cable pretty firmly tought, nip the bolt up again, check its pulling about hoe you want it to (it doesnt have to be exact) fully tighten the caliper pinch bolt and then fine tune with the cable adjust on the lever.

Excellent, thought that was the case but got scared so thought i'd double check in case i bodged anything. Cheers for letting me know. :D

Suppose that this is one advantage over hydraulic brakes - easy to look after! May upgrade in due course but no point until its necessary.

Also make sure the right pad, static pad is closer to the rotor without rubbing on it.

Cheers Xtreem, will try this as well. I'm pretty confident that this should sort things out.

That pad needs adjusting as they wear - well, both do.

Thanks ss. Tomorrow I will pull more cable through and move the pads. Then go for a ride! :D

also visit Hayes website and download the MX3 manual as the brake is the same for adjustment and set up.
