How far do you have to ride to college Will ?

About 3 miles, I miss being at York college, it was 10 miles then, and 15 back.

York is a great city to cycle in no question. However, how did you cycle 10 miles one way and 15 back, were you just doing the extra 5 for training?

I liked cycling through the city center, I'd guess it was extra training, when I commuted I used a heavy MTB, old version of a Saracen XRay.

But it's not a "dumbass" question, his attitude was downright out of order for such as post, it was most hideous and anything I also said bad was provoked by his insults.

When I saw that post appear I really didn't know where it was coming from - it didn't seem to follow from anything that you or anyone else had said. And until you wrote that above, I assumed that it must have been a private banter thing that you had between the 2 of you. So you didn't know where it came from either!

Yea, I can't say I've ever really acknowledged him before. He was just way OTT, maybe the way I worded the post might have sounded stupid, but it was a perfectly sensible question.

Anyway I took the stickers off, I can't say I like the look of the wheels better, hopefully I'll just get used to it, I liked the stickers when I was pedaling along, the spinning was mesmerizing.

On each side of the wheels, 2 of the stickers came off fine, but the other 2 have left glue/ an odd foil look, I don't know how to get these off without ruining the black paint.

Nail varnish remover (might not be that common in your household, it's been a while since my student days ) or white spirit. Both should dissolve the adhesive but go steady at first.

Won't it also disolve the black paint too?

gavH - knock it off or a ban will follow.

I'd be interested to know what criteria you use for moderation on here John. I didn't see the deleted comments on this thread, but the 'first crash' thread was (and probably still is) in serious need of moderation, but you were strangely absent then...???

Mostly we moderate stuff that's drawn to our attention using the flag system. But in this case I happened to notice that the discussion had turned downright nasty for no good reason.

Heated disagreements are one thing, personal abuse quite another.

  • I always take the stance that if a daft question is asked, then pass it by, Freehub I am not suggesting that yours was m8, just a general point - less point! life is far too short to get irate about Cake Stop (in this case) banter. Now I know the appointment that GavH holds and quite frankly I am surprised at his over - reaction. Let’s consider he was having a very bad day shall we. We have all been there...

Hi, I've just put a Mavic Aksium front wheel on my commuter I cycle to college on, before I had an Open Pro on a Tiagra hub, the tyre split on it and I cba changing it so I put me aksium on that I've got laying around.

The thing is, the stickers saying "Mavic Aksium Race", I'm worried they might make thieves more attracted to my bicycle?

    Thanks
    Will.

Dude this is Manchester, the patron saint of nicking stuff. It wouldn't matter if it was a bright pink Barbie bike, some little sh1t will have it away if you make it easy enough for them. Stick a decent lock on it and you should be ok mate.

Will, I'd have PM'd you but I suspect this apology is better off being done in public.

Not a good day yesterday and your question, whether sensible or not rattled me a touch. Your less than polite responses rattled me significantly further still. The three pints of Guinness and half dozen bottles of beer I'd had by that time played no part whatsoever. Honest guv. That said, I should not have posted the way I did and for that I apologise. I was out of order and it was unecessary.

Anyway, to answer the question, No, I don't think your bike is more attractive to thieves, not even with aero spokes and mavic stickers. Now, stick some Shimano WH-R550 badges on it and it'll be gone in jig time

It's fine if it was alcohol talking you don't need to apologise.

I was thinking of putting the Aksiums on my caad9 and trying my R550's on the commuter, I'm going to try and put some life back into the Open Pros, hopefully if the rims snap I won't fall off, just they're so sluggish it's awfull.

Why don't you move to Sheffield Will, the commute may suit you more than your current one. The Snake Pass is a beauty with snow on it. How many miles per year would that rack up before pleasure riding?!

I'm not that bothered about miles anymore, there is no point me worying about miles that much as my knee can't take hundreds of miles a week. And I might be going to sheffield next year.
  • Topographically speaking, half of Sheffield is downhill :) (Great city, by the way.)

Well as I expected, staff at the college campus are getting p1553d off by always having to go unlock the gates, so they're going to introduce a fob system, basically, Ill have to pay £10 for this fob that will open the gate when I press it, I asked how they know thieves won't get one of these fobs, well apparently we have to put all our details like address down, at the end of the year the £10 is refundable. I don't know if this is a good idea or bad though?

I would say that getting a £10 refund would be a good idea....not a bad one...

I was on about the key fob idea on a whole, of course getting the 10 quid is a good idea....

    ...just a thought, Will.
As it's only a 3 mile commute that you have and you're concerned of the safety of your bike...
...is it practical/possible for you to get a cheap 2nd hand hack to use, rather than risking your good bike?

As has being pointed out it is my hack bike, just it's got Aksiums that I'd consider in a higher league than I'd use on a hack bike.
