Constantly adjusting Avid Elixirs?

Well, I am :? I thought it might have something to do with the fork mounted Thule rack I have so I've started putting the seats down in ther car and squeezing the bike in the back but it is the same every time....they squeal and rub. Everytime I take the front wheel off and put it back on it rubs and needs adjusting before I ride and it's really annoying me now! Does the calliper need servicing and bleeding? I've had the bike about 5 months now and in need of new pads too, so a bleed could be a good idea I suppose.
Any one else had this problem with their Elixirs?

Are you padding out the pads with spacers when in transit?
Also ensure you refit the wheel correctly and with the sam QR tension.0 -
Had no problems like that with mine. Remember, its got that neat mounting thing, so just loosen the bolts, pull the brake lever, and tighten the bolts back up with the lever still held. Obviously all with the wheel still in the bike.0

Have you checked that the pistons aren`t sticking, push the rotor towards the pads as you pull the lever a good few times, this will free up the pistons hopefully. Also you can take the pads out and insert the pad spacing device you should have got with bike/brakes. This will force the piston back into the right position and give you more space and should stop the rubbing. To stop the squealing clean the pads with fine emery paper, then clean the pads and rotors with methylated spirits and put it all back together. If the pads are still rubbing the brake may be overbled which forces the pads onto the rotor your lbs may need to do a fresh bleed and re space pistons.
Hope this helpsMarin Mount Vision Beast

+1.
Mine have been off and on two different bikes/forks and my front wheel is in and out like Wayne Rooney at a glamorous granny competition, but mine have been top drawer (touch wood).
It does sound like the caliper ain't centralised.0 -
Not touched mine since I fitted them months ago - wheel comes out , pad spacer goes in0

Hmmmmm, I wasn't given pad spacers when I bought the bike. I'll order up some new superstar pads that come withthe spring spacer and set them up again, might even buy a bleed kit tooAdam.

Why bleed them if they don't need bleeding.. as the old cliche goes: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it..."0 -

I sometimes see the same problem with Juicys, but I believe it is related to taking the front wheel off, more specifically:supersonic wrote:Also ensure you refit the wheel correctly and with the sam QR tension.
Any tips on ensuring the same QR tension?0 -
It is about judging when to snap the lever shut - I aim to wind the nut up until I can just feel the increase in resistance of the lever at about 80 degrees from shut.0

Thanks. That's what I've been trying to do, I'm just not very good at it0 -

The pads come with the spring NOT the red spacers that Avid supply with new brakes.A piece of thick card jammed between the pads with the wheel off does the same job 8)0 -
get some pad spacers for use when the bike is in transit.
re fit the wheel and ride.
dont fiddle with the caliper."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Stick em up your arse you might find that work better there.
Give em back to the bike shop while there under warranty. Tell them that you are aware there have been some issues with Elixrs. Explain the issue you have been having... If they cant do anything with them then they will replace the brake .... under warranty, Job done!
Nice ride this evening boss! Remember the slogan for next week, " its easy to say no"

If you buy an avid bleed kit you'll get a spacer as part of it0
