Project B.S.O beater

OK, heres the deal, i had an idea the other day that with all the bargain basement parts out there, and online sale shops like CRC, it wouldnt be that hard to build a brand new bike for the same prise as a Halfords special, only 10 times better quality, and alot more fun, and individual too.
so the budget is around £200, i think that is a reasonable amount, and is the average price of the higher end B.S.O's i think its important to have a good frame to upgrade as well, so frame is key! no ebay bargains, this has to be all brand new stuff you can get any day of the week.
and GO! (frame first!)

or for a bigger hitting bike

I've treid this maybe half a dozen times: have a search for my 'budget bike build' threads. However at a higher budget to compete with £500 machines.
I don't think it can be done for £200 as some of the parts I was using at £500 were the cheapest available!0 -
You will never build a bike for £200 that beats the rockrider 5.2! It as theadless steerer(so very easily upgradeable), a disk brake compatible frame(you can guess the advantage here ) and freehub rear wheel (won't snap like a freewheel will).
One of the major oissues with BSO is that they have threaded steerers and freewheel hubs IMO.
Only drawback to the rockrider 5.2 value-wise is that the upgrade to disk brakes will require new wheels, the 5.3 may be better if you factor in this.0 -
i think your pessimism is, well, pessimistic!I like bikes and stuff0

if your gonna go 100 for a fram you could get a really upgradable frame....

its 25 more but.........I like bikes and stuff0 -
OK, lets up-budget to £300, its more than a bso, but is stil low budget....I like bikes and stuff0
-
I might be able to do it at £300, but it wouldn't be as good as the BeOne with a Tora that is £299 at CRC!0
-
I'll have a go after me tea ;-)0
-
This should be good... *grabs popcorn and settles in for the night*
(Not being sarcastic, at £300 SS may just crack it
Though I have just seen this are Argos/Muddyfox upping their game? :shock:0 -
Like the Argos spec list lol.
What fork is it? Looks like a 5 year old bomber!0 -

According to MTBR it is a Marzocchi Bomber MX Comp with 105mm travel :? and another online site selling them lists the brakes as "Hydraulic Front and Rear Disc Brakes"
So yeah, I am going to go with you and say that it's old stuff.0 -

Apparently the bike is male0 -
well i cant find this beone with tora, obviously at that price it didnt last long. :?supersonic wrote:I might be able to do it at £300, but it wouldn't be as good as the BeOne with a Tora that is £299 at CRC!0

They just sold out!
Was a Beone Aspire 1.0 20080 -
Argos should be reprimanded for selling a bike with an 18" frame then stating it is suitable for an inside leg measurement of 29-35".
Wouldn't throw my leg over it with a 31" leg, too fond of the old crown jewels. Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"0 -
Argos should be banned from selling bikes lol.0
-
Found out it's a one size fits all bike, there is only the 18" and on other sites they're saying it's suitable for a 25-29" leg.
The warehouse for Muddy Fox (Universal Bikes) is only 10 minutes up the road from me, might go and see if I can have a sit on one of these ELITE bikes as they call them. Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"0 -

How's it going, got it less than £400 yet?!
;-)
I am ensuring mine is at least 8 speed cassette geared and hydraulically damped fork.0 -
jesus christ that argos/muddyfox thing is 18kg so thats 39.6lbs
the moon weighs less than that0 -
That'll be with the box lol.0
-
Anyway I have a bike made up with alloy frame, 8 speed shimano groupset and hydro forks for £328.0

(spec lst!)I like bikes and stuff0 -
That is heavy, my daughters Shogun undercuts that by a good margin (although nopt as good a spec)......
Mind you still lighter than some of the 8" downhill bikes some people like to XC on....
For anyone trying this, Merlin do shimano groupsets at good prices!

One sticking point will be the P&P, That I am guessing will add close to £50 to the cost of teh above unless you compromise on individual parts to get more from one source like CRC.
Shame the seat tube isn't 31.8 or you could save a couple of quid on the front mech

Darn good effort though.....

to kick up the quality another step, replace the fork with a mz supercomp, for a fiver more, an acera mech for £3 more, and a avid single digit 5 brake for 4 quid more and it looks very nice...I like bikes and stuff0

u need to give weblinks to them items to prove they are real.joshtp/mbukman wrote:to kick up the quality another step, replace the fork with a mz supercomp, for a fiver more, an acera mech for £3 more, and a avid single digit 5 brake for 4 quid more and it looks very nice...0
