I live in Manchester and am looking for some trail recommendations that are accessible by train as I don't currently have a car.

Any recommendations appreciated.

Thanks

From Exchange & Victoria take the Burnley train and get off in Todmorden. Plenty of riding to be had in the Todmorden/Hebden Bridge area.

My website (link in my sig) shows the nearest train stations to trail centres. Then its just a case of sticking Manchester to ??? into trainline.com and getting a price.
My Website - Trail Centre info for the UK: MTB Trail Time
  • Try this: http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/PennineB ... ?PageId=98 it's a loop on the pennine bridleway accessible from Littleborough and Walsden which you get to from Victoria. (They are stops earlier than Todmorden on the same line) This link gives trail map AND train info.

Bamford station probably! You have a few options in the Hope Valley on that line (the Piccadilly to Sheffield line on the slow train: Hope, Bamford, Edale etc.).

2nd for peak district (hope etc)

Riding out of ruabon station (1 station on from wrexham) you can quickly get up onto esclusham mountain, over the top and back down through llandegla etc to wrexham station.

Station at Delemere (dont know what its like fo riding though)

Station at Delemere is literally 2 minutes ride from Cafe and what you might call the trail head.

Been looking at Edale and it sounds good

Thanks, sounds promising - only 25 mins by train.

Any recommended routes? Where to head from the train station?

The Littleborough loop sounds great - just what I'm looking for. Thanks

I will keep an eye out for routes around Hope, Bamford and Edale then.. :-)

Edale also sounds great. Do you know where I can find some trail maps for these routes?

    Thanks

I was thinking of trying some of the trans pennine - I'm not too far from Althrincham. Do you know where the track is accessed in Althrincham, and the best direction to head?

    Thanks

hi, you can get maps from this site for a small charge, which have routes already marked on them, which are ideal to get to know the area

    http://www.bikemaps.co.uk/peak_district.htm

i would also recommend getting an os map of the area (ol1) then you can start plotting your own routes too.

    cheers

I agree with gaz, get an OS map of the area you want to ride, great investment (and you can sit by the fire in the pub after, drying out and planning your next ride)

if your trying to join up bits of offroad to complete bigger loops, the satilite pictures available on google maps etc can also be helpful (some tracks not on maps) as well, although most are a few years old.

There is a little book: Dark Peak mountainbiking, the true grit trails. Loads of routes in there for Ladybower, Edale (Jacobs ladder), Hope etc... Well worth the investment as it is some of the best riding in England if not the UK!

  • the tpt goes through the altrincham ind est at the end of the m60 something......
head west toward liverpool and you will pass lymm, nice quiet ride out, could be boggy in places. head east and you start to hit the pennines in a couple of hours.
the track runs through some nice country parks. look for the burger van at the crossroads at altrincham with the horse field next to it. that is right on the route.
