CUBE mountain bikes - question

Why is it that the latest isse of "What mountain bike" did not feature 1 single Cube bike?

I know they're German and not massively sold over here but they look stunning bikes, great value and seem to satisfy the pants off their owners.

I'm looking to buy my 1st MTB since I was 12 (now 26) and get into MTBing. Does any one own a Cube?

ChainReaction cycles are selling them - I got my eye on a Fritzz or the Ams Comp 09.

Any thoughts anyone?....

Thanks
Anyone else ride a Schwinn?...

Given there are well over 200 brands of bike, and we test maybe 10 models per issue... not suprising you don't always see what you want ;-)

But cube have been tested many times in the past.
  • I've got a Cube Acid. Bought it before the price went up by £100 a few months ago. Nice bike. Well specced for the money compared to others in a similar price range. A bit heavy (but then I was comparing it with my 15 year old Kona Lava Dome with no suspension and old canti brakes). But nice to ride, really comfy. Was the bike which fitted me best of all the others I tried in a similar price bracket which was main reason for purchase. Funky looking and a bit different. Gets positive comments whenever I ride it. Seems to be standing up to wear and tear nicely.

  • Fritzz and Ams Comp are two MASSIVELY different bikes. What kind of riding will you mostly be doing?

I've owned a Cube Ltd Team. Also ridden a AMS125 more than a couple of times.

Cubes seem to be superb machines, light, well specced and have not fallen apart.

    i'd buy one.
  • Not sure if it helps but i have a Cube ltd Pro. Had it for about 8 months. Fantastic, light and well specced for the price. Viva la cube! Perhaps that should have been something German?

    +1.

Fritzz is an Enduro bike with 160mm of travel: AMS is an XC bike with 100mm of travel. There are 2 versions in between those: Sting (120mm) and Stereo (140mm).

Took delivery of my Cube AMS Pro K18 on Friday then ragged it around Thetford forest on Sunday in the Whyte Winter Series and it was brilliant ! This is my first full sus as had Specialized HT's up 'til now, the Cube is so much lighter than my other bike, excellent suspension setup and the equipment level is pretty top notch too for the money, XT & SLX chainset. I was finding it really hard to choose my new set of wheels but always liked the look of the Cube's and the location of the rear shock, nicely tucked out of the way. As this is the 2009 bike it has Formula Oro brakes which were great considering the torrent of mud and rain they were trying to cope with, Fox Float RP23 on the rear and RockShox Reba U-Turn Air's on the front with poplock, all great stuff.

Compared to my HT it climbs like a mountain goat and just feels way more responsive, could be a combo of less weight and riding position, buggered if I know

All in all I would highly recommend giving the Cube a go, only time will tell if it continues to perform like it has so far, watch this space :D

Oh yeah and I got mine from ChainReaction in the sale and they did a fantastic job of getting me the bike in time for the race, really went out of thier way to get it shipped in time, good work

Thanks very much for your responses,

My knowledge of mountain bikiing is very limited so bear with me! Cat With No Tail - the type of riding I'm looking to do would be XC I guess the 'all round' mountain biking. Thanks for raising the question. I was aware of dirt/jump bikes and other types but didn't realise the Fritzz and AMS were so different. Wikipedia has quite a good article on MTB types so things are a bit clearer!

Last year I was thinking of a hardtail but a few people I know have reccommended full suss. Also (this may sound daft) I'm more likely to get more use and enjoyment out of a bike that for me is more the top end of my budget - a treat say, rather than find a cheaper entry level bike. I'm an all or nothing type of person and having decent kit inspires me to ride. My Mrs calls it expensive taste though - typical.

So what reccommendations/advice for a XC bike?

    Thanks again.

Once again thanks for all your advice.

I'd be looking at other brands too, you need to try them before you buy. Cubes are good but there maybe something that suits you better, have a look at the Anthem X if you want a 4" travel bike.

Vorsprung Durch Eine Cube perhaps (progress through a cube)

If were you I'd go full sus - more versatile and if you've got propedal on the rear shock then you can make it pretty damn close to a hardtail climbing experience.

I can recommend a Giant Anthem X(1/2/3), as can quite a few others on here - try searching you're interested.

  • I can't advise on what bike, but would say that if you want it for XC type riding I wouldn't rule out a hard tail, you'll get a much lighter and better specced bike for the same money, which would be great if you don't really need rear suspension. I ride XC and trails and have a HT, and wouldn't even consider a full suss for the type of riding I do. A HT at your top end budget would buy you a fantastic bike.

You really should try both and see for yourself.
