Hope tech x2 brakes or Avid elixer r.
I am currently after some new brakes for my cove stiffee, at the moment am split between hope tech x2's and avid elixer r's. I am aware of the initial problems with compatibility of hope levers with xtr shifters (any help regarding this is appreciated).
Am also aware of a few cases of the avid elixers dragging on the rotor.

Could anyone give me any help thru experience with these brakes, i am running xtr shifters on race face low riser bar. the shifters have removable pods.

Thanks.

Fitted elixirs to my trek fuel ex, cut the lines to length, bled them and they've been perfect ever since. Best I've used by a country mile - not tried the x2's though, but with merlin's deals on the avids it's hard to justify the hope
  • I have the avids on my 09 stumpy. Put sintered pads in when the organics wore out and are much better. Had to shorten and bleed and with the genuine bleed kit was a piece of p**s. I am 16 stone and they stop me really well. They have great feel as well even with the sintered pads. And for 160 notes for both F & R they are a steal.

Just ditched my Elixir CR's and switched to Hope tech M4's and it's been one of the best upgrades I've made. I was constantly having to realign the calipers on my CR's to stop the rotors dragging and I couldn't get along with the spongy lever feel and useless pad contact adjustment.

I would thoroughly recommend the Hopes if you've got the cash. They are a bit finnicky to set up initially, but you can be happy in the knowledge that once this is done, they just work perfectly. Just follow the tech videos on their website and you'll be good. Stopping power also seems to be loads better with my M4's.

With regards to shifters, I run mine with XT shifters just fine. You can run the shifters with the windows, but in order to set my levers up for one finger braking, I had to remove them. I haven't even noticed that they're gone though.

You can also get Hope's version of Avid's matchmaker clamps to tidy up your bars, but I believe you have to contact Hope directly for them.

    Hope that helps.

As mentioned above, I use my Tech X2s with XT shifters (windows removed) and theyr'e fine. I believe XTR shifter swork fine too, but look here:

I'm really pleased with the Hope's. I'm no lightweight, and they haul me to a stop quite happily, with plenty of feel and modulation. The (drilled) lever takes a bit of getting used to, but only takes a few rides.

They're not cheap, but well worth the cash in my opinion. We'll see how they fare through the winter!
  • the hope matchmaker type clamps are available through CRC but are currently out of stock, however for those of us who use sram the avid ones actually fit onto the hope levers as well.
  • I will offer opposite advice from above froma couple of my friends.

We all ride in Wales, and the couple often bike in the alps. one has avid elxir and the other a set of hope 4 pots.

The hopes areengineering nice, but were alot more of a fiddle to set up. also there is alot more to go wrong. the lad who rides with the hopes is considering swappingt o the avids or possibly the hayes 9 as alot of riders are using them in the Alps(they are as simple as breaks come so dont break) though his draw back to the hayes is they aren't flashy enough lol

Thanks for the link, i think that may have swung me towards the hopes, i dont mind the weight of them as my current brakes are roughly the same, so my mind is on overtime till my next payday now!!!! (1.5 weeks to go).
Will have to check up the mounts as i will need 2 , the calipers are post mount i notice so i will require a rear i.s.to postmount adapter (160 rotor) as well as a postmount to postmount for the front (to take a 183 rotor). That should do the trick.

    Thanks once again.

18bikes in hope have the matchmakers for flip flop levers in stock.
