Harry junior and I are taking part in our first duathlon on Sunday. I'm doing the adults and he's doing the kids one.

I'm quite happy about the cycling part but haven't run for anything more than a bus in the last decade or two.

Any hints/tips?

  • You are entering a running event without actually having done any running for many years?!
  • Get ready to suffer. As soon as you get off the bike for the second leg of the run you'll get cramp so be ready for it!

Well done Harry - that's the spirit.
Good luck and you'll have great satisfaction in finishing (maybe take a torch to find the finishing line  )

    Oooh, that's going to hurt.

Increase your cadence towards the end of the bike leg and don't push too hard, to make sure your legs are okay for the start of the run. Once you're away from transition you can collapse in a hedge but it's important to look good when people can see you :D

Good advice but unfortunately its on a closed circuit so I will be in full view of the crowd right the way round.

Anyway this running malarky can't be that difficult

oh its not...providing you are used to it. Just be careful you don't pick up an injury as obviously as a cyclist your cardio should be reasonable but the muscles used for running and cycling arent exactly the same.

What are those kids shoes that they do with the wheels in the heels? I could get a pair of them

Yep, pick up your cadence before the run and dont run out too hard, let yourself settle a little, you will get round better .
