changing chain rings

I need to replace the large outer worn chain ring on my old trusty Sunn Cycloss cross bike. Never done this before and I've no idea about compatibility. I was thinking of just replacing the outer ring as I don't use the inner that much. I know it is a 5 bolt 110mm set up but I don't know if a new outer ring will be compatible with the old inner. Are most makes a standard fitting and compatible with each other?

Most standard 110 rings will fit. Campag do a 110 with one leg at a slightly different bcd to the rest but these are highlighted as Campag specific.

I don't mean to shatter the illusion but it's got hardly any teeth and is only really any good for climbing vertical cliff faces or towing medium sized trucks.
