Hi guys,

Just wanted to know if anybody could recommend me some tyres and some brake calipers for cross racing?

Cheers
Jim

    I'd recommend Schwalbe Racing Ralphs:

Very easy to get on my Mavic Kysriums and lightweight. Not tried them in really muddy conditions, but they perform well on normal courses. Bargain price at the moment
For calipers, I think the Tektro CR720s are very good value:

Like all cantis, they require a bit of time on setting them up correctly, but they are good for the money. I've got some Swisstop green brakepads waiting to go on, as wet weather braking on the supplied pads isn't brilliant (dry conditions are fine)
  • Jim, you have PM re cantis.

    Cheers, Gareth.

Tyre choice really depends on conditions - most serious riders use tubs simply because you can run them at lower pressures to give you better grip. Running a clincher at less than 2.5 bar can be tricky - it simply comes off the rim. Tubeless might be an option - but they don't work too well at low pressures with some rims.

In terms of brakes, the Tektros are good, as are Froglegs or TRPs. I'd avoid low profile cantis like Avis Shortys or Shimano - they have poor mud clearance.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
