Silly question......

hi!
i recently bought a new mountain bike, and you know the plastic round thing behind the rear cassette, does it have a function? does anyone keep it on? i know its a minor thing but it bugs me lol.

    it is a spoke protector.

    its job is to stop the chain taking chunks out of the spokes if the chain over shifts onto the spokes.

    Keep it or lose it. It is upto you.

    It is there to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

    Not required if limit screws are properly set and mech hasn't taken a whack.

    thanks for the speedy responce, i thought everyone would be trick or treating lol. its sounds like it has a purpose i suppose. if it will save my wheels i will hang onto it for another while...
