Hello guys,

Need some advice if possible, I have sent off all the forms for the cycle scheme with evans, its a fairly large company and they are set in their way in terms of the Evans scheme, so no planet-x bikes, or Boardmans for me

I went to my local today, and they had a few things, a BMC that had a huge discount on it, and full 105 kit, looked ok, but having not heard muchabout the brand, was unsure..

They also had a Raleigh with carbon rear and fork, but the bloke said most people don't want to ride a Raleigh lol..

What do people think is the best bike at £1000 from the Evans range at the moment?

caad9 seems to get good reviews...Try the 56...I am 6ft tall and my 56 Trek is a good fit,too many variables about bike geometry, are you arms or legs longer etc...ride it!,
Evans normally let you out for a short ride to get an idea.

Whilst Evans have a good range, I would be more inclined to seek out a good independent cycle dealer in your area. That way, you can make sure you get a good bike fit and some sound advice. Or, your £1000 will go further if you by 2nd hand via Ebay. Obviously, buyer beware!

Cycle 2 Workthrough Evans, so unless you can find an ebay seller willing to take thevoucher, not really any good!

For a grand the CAAD9 anyday, though I think the 56 will come up small on you, but you never know. Is that all they ahve nationally or just local?

    National.

This is the issue, I can't have them bring in all these bikes for me to try, they only have bmc in stock..

    What about this http://www.evanscycles.com/products/sco ... e-ec019434

  • BMC is a swiss manufacturer... they have some top of the range frames with original geometry and design. They used to sponsor Astana and Phonak a few years back. Landis "won" the Tour de France riding a BMC frame in 2006.
If you like the bike, go for it

If you prefer the CAAD9 - and that's the one I'd probably go for - why not try out the BMC's they have locally and then see if the size matches the Cannondale? The most important measurement is top tube.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

Quite a few dealers do a cycle to work scheme, not only Evans!

Yeh but Evans run their own scheme so if that's who your employer chooses you're stuck with them.

FWIW I'm 5'11" and I ride a 54cm Cannondale. Prob worth trying the 56 cm Caad9, it's £50 deposit you get back if you don't want it. Looks nice in black too!

Where do you live? The Evans I went to in Waterloo let me take bikes out for 15-20 mins. I found them to be really keen to help, even if their fitting advice could have been better.

Both wiggle and ribble do the cycle to work scheme. Ribble will let you put Money towards too!

Can recommend the BMC Streetfire SSX. Put over 10,000km on one in 3 years with no problems.

Little update and I would appreciate any final views..

Shoudl be getting voucher for the weekend..

However Evans have sold all of the 2009 CAAD9 105 bikes..so really it falls between getting this years CAAD9 with a lesser groupset or getting the BMC..

any final views on this chaps? You've been very helpful so far.

I'm not going to say 'buy the bmc' just because it's what I ride. You need to swing a leg over as many bikes as possible, not just the ones at the top of your budget. That way you can get a feel for a bike that feels comfortable which at the end of the day is what really matters. You may find that an off the peg bike is just the job but if not then you can play around with saddle height, saddle position, handlebar height and width and stem length on your £1000 bike to get the same comfy position. See if they'll let you ride a few. You never know you may actually prefer a cheaper model!

Tiagra, 105 and Ultegra are all good and reliable. There is a weight issue -/+ 250 grams or so for each step up or down in groupset but I'll leave you to make your mind up on that one.

The wheels on the BMC get a good review here http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... t-09-34040 and I do think it's a good deal for the complete bike but getting it just because it is a good deal is not the right thing to do.

    right just been to evans!

Had a chat to a lanky guy called..you guessed it.. Evan, I sat on a 'large' they had (albeit a more expensive carbon model) and it was fine, was amazed at how light it was.. Really good. Don't know why I overlooked them the way I did in the first place, look superb up close.

So twenty mins later, he had my deposit, and the white version should be in by the end of the week! Along with my voucher..

    http://www.cranksbikes.com.au/UserFiles/Image/BMC_...

Lovley, he said it didn't come with any pedals, so I guess I will have to have a look on the day, and some shoes to match. Dubios using clips at first on the commute as I might stack it.. And there are cars about. So maybe get used to it in more quiet places and use the rockhopper for a while longer!

Thanks for your help so far.

Congrats on the bike it sounds great....as you are buying from Evans, they should help out with a deal on pedals and shoes...I took advice and bought Look classic road pedals and specialised bg sport road shoes together £100....more than happy with both.
  • I was in exactly the same position as you and went for the exact same bike. I've had the BMC for a week now and absolutely love it.
I found Evans to be surprisingly good. Very helpful and knowledgeable. My bike was setup on their turbo trainer and they set my riding position up perfectly. Something i've never experienced at any other time when buying a bike.
hope everything's going well with yours...

    Hi,

well, I have not had the voucher yet, mainly because my writing is so shite they sent it t the wrong address :D

So I have given them the right one, the bike is waiting for me in store, I plan to collect after work tomorrow or more likley hungover on saturday!

Looking forward to it to be fair. How have you found the bike overall? I just can't wait to get shot of my rockhopper, great bike, but its becoming anoying having these weedy little men overtake me on road bikes day in day out haha!

Wow, Evans should really learn how to spell brakes !

    Smarter than the average bear.
  • Having rode mountain bikes for the last 19 years and commuted on a Marin Point Reyes the Streetfire took a bit of getting used to at first!
I felt like I wasn't doing the bike justice!
But I've soon got used to it and I'm now not aching from the new riding position!
The power delivery is amazing and it accelerates so quickly. I did find that the difference between the chainrings was too large and at first was struggling to get the right gear but I seem to have got used to that now and i'm not finding it a problem.
The kit on the bike is superb and I can't fault it. It's a fast, stiff & light bike and I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.
The only thing is I've riden it everyday since I've had it and it's not stopped raining! I got some of the Crud roadracer guards which work well. Although the fit on the rear seat stays is very tight and I had to cut part of the guard off as suggested on their website.
    Have fun...
