Well it finally happened on the way to work this am.

Feeling all confident, hit a corner far too fast, front wheel left the cycle lane, hit some mud and over I went.

1st concern was for my bike, which has hardly a scratch. However a trip to A&E showed I've fractured my bloody wrist. Now wearing a stupid cast which has to stay on for 6 weeks! Can't even drive... So all the gains I've made with my leg strenght and weight loss will go out the window and I'll be a fat bloater by the time I hit the road again.

Oh well if your gonna crash, have a proper one.

Sorry to hear - not so good. Just keep active, must be some exercise you can do. Don't stuff face, although temptation will be there. What about running? Is that out of the question? Long walks.

Mmm never been that into running but may give it shot.

There are plenty of nice hilly walks around Aberdeen so I'll drag some of mates out with me.

I was meant to be going for my first mtb experience next weekend with a mate on a £2500 Orange which I was really looking forward to! Bugger!

how about a turbotrainer, getting on and off may be a bit difficult but after that you could sit up quite easily.

Aww no, what a pain! Fwiw, you may lose your fitness, but take the opportunity to actively watch what you eat and drink so the bloater part won't materialise. And you might even take healthier eating habits into your bike-riding future!
  • Bad luck dude... hope ya heal soon

    You could go recumbant....... :P

    Ouch! That's a bit of a b*ugger.

+1 for the turbo trainer. Well worthwhile if you can't get out on the road.

Can you hire turbo trainers anywhere, not really wanting to spend £120+ on one.

    Thanks for the concern peeps.

Have a look in Classifieds or on ebay for a second hand one.

Same thing happened to me in July (broken wrist). Spent the whole summer sitting around eating and getting fat, only been back on the bike a few weeks and it's bloody hard work. That fat just doesn't want to go away. Exercising with the cast on might be hard work because the moment your body starts to warm up you'll sweat inside the cast and the arm will swell making it hurt more.

I'm fairly sure i fractured my scaphoid a while back, really hurt for a long time, doctor said it was rather early (10 days later) to be able to see a fracture, and it wasn't obviously done, so casting it would have been overkill.

I didn't stop riding with the cast on. Just stick to very quiet routes and keep the cast protected (shave above and below the cast, duct tape a bag over the cast. Then ride in the smallest top you can to keep cool and prevent excessive sweating.

Yeah it is my scaphoid I've fractured, the nurse showed me my xray and there it was clear as day.

How did you manage to grip the handle bars with your cast on? I'm struggling to open my beer atm, my wife helps me with such tasks. She's good like that!

    Did the same myself.

Albeit, I was on my Downhill Bike riding a Mountain Bike Park.
Went over the bars, flipped over, landed on my wrist and broke it.

My reaction too was first to check my bike, as my wrist just felt very badly bruised. But it was only when I took my glove off and looked at it, I knew it was broken! Did not look right!

    Enjoy the beer!
