I think all BASE jumping is illegal in this country and I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to jump off the Eifel tower either hence the quick get away. Would be pretty fun though, I wonder if those fixed ropes they ascended are always there or they put them up before.0

If you really want an adrenalin rush I can recommend joining the army infantry and getting pinned down by mortar fire for a few hours or actually NEEDING to fix bayonets.
All this extreme base jumping and bungee chord stuff is child's play in comparison.
Way too easy of a way to try and get your 15 minutes of fame.0 -

Or people having fun? FFS, lighten up.
I have no intention of being pinned down by mortar fire or jumping off of a bridge, but if faced with a choice...0 -

I somewhat disagree with the "having fun" as the reason for doing it. Most people always tell the cameras that it's for the adrenalin rush. And maybe it is, for them.
However, I can guarantee that seeing some coming at you with a bayonet is a whole lot more of a RUSH than any jump you'll ever take.
And you're right, I should lighten up. What the h*ll is my problem? I guess it's seeing these guys treated like hero's when it's really nothing.0 -

Interesting, and he got his 15 minutes of fame. Maybe it's the idea that he's in control of his own destiny whereas the soldier being shelled and attacked by another soldier with a
big knife on the end of his gun is not in that sort of controlled environment. The soldier faces a random craziness where his life is concerned and generally is not in anywhere near in control. There certainly is risk involved in climbing the building but nowhere near the risk of random bullets and the like. Ah, but I'm rambling on, sorry folks.0 -

More like 15 years of fame. The climb Dave linked to wasn't a one-off:

I'm not sure if I share Dave's admiration, though. I admire the physical aspect of it, and the bravery of Robert, but then I wonder why he does it. I saw a documentary about the guy a few years ago, and he's married with kids - is it responsible to continue risking your life on a regular basis when you have a family to support? Do they deserve that? It seems quite selfish to me.
I guess you could say the same thing about soldiers, though.0 -

Stop acting the big man just because you're too stupid to get a proper job and got suckered into being a murderer.Training is like fighting with a gorilla. You don’t stop when you’re tired. You stop when the gorilla is tired.0 -

but now I think this more interesting
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHlOvhlKPvs&feature=player_embedded
and when my daughter heard of my interest, she said, At least you’d look better in one of those bat outfits than in cycling shorts!
On a more serious note, the statistics don’t show base jumping as a particular risky sport, provided one knows what one’s doing, and anyone with their head screwed on will make sure they know what’s involved beforehand.
Base jumping is very popular just outside Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland, and on some summer days, there are queues of jumpers at the 3 jump-off places at the top of the cliff. A licence to jump costs about £15 p.a., and for that you can jump as many times a year as you want.
Per year the total number of jumps at Lauterbrunnen is about 10,000, yet the average number of accidents per year is just 7, with on average one death per year (0.01%).
I’m sure statistically there are more dangerous sports.0 -

If you didn't go round the world starting wars in the name of democracy (or Oil as it's also known ), then maybe you wouldn't spend so much time pinned down by mortar fire. Just an idea! :P0 -

Between 1981 and 2009 there have been at least 133 fatalities related to the sport of B.A.S.E. Jumping.
5,130 US soldiers killed killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan alone.
So is the 15minutes of fame you speak of the part where the News Anchor says "Another soldier lost in action today after being pinned down under heavy mortar fire. Now here is Tom with the Sports Report" ?
B.A.S.E Jumping, Sky Diving, Bungy Jumping, even Downhill MTBing is a CONTROLLED adrenalin rush. It's a recreational activity. Obviously when the object of the game is to avoid death, as it is in war, the stakes and the rush are raised ten fold.
Are you suffering from post traumatic stress or what dude?0 -

One thing Dennis, I guess people are recruited into solidering as they need a job or they want the kill, patriotisim mixed in too, whereas the base jumpers I guess pursue it as a hobby? I like rebels so the Eiffel Tour clip is a good one... of course what you say re soldiering is true though...but am just talking hobbies and extreme sports. And these guys jumped when nobody was around...they could have done it in daytime...that would really have been 15 minutes of fame...0
