was behind me and saw that I needed to move out to pass parked cars, he held back and then overtook when there was plenty of space

Good start to the day!

Likewise car driver that went to overtake me, was alongside me, realised that road narrowed with roadworks, then hung back allowing me to take primary. Thank you sir!

Also - remeber that most of the people who cut you up/ drive to close, pull out infront of you are not deliberately trying to hurt you, but have made a mistake

  • Thank them!

I always (to the amusement of others) thank drivers who've made my life easier in any way, whether intentionally or not...

And Spen's right - the vast majority of people aren't out to get you.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that does that :)

  • Had a pedestrian appear in the middle of Camberwell New Road from between two white transit vans...I was over taking on the right. He told me he was sorry and didn't look as I picked myself up off the floor.

    Me:
    In Day glo orange vest.
Bike with lights on in the daylight! two flashing one static.
I guess you can't make people look!

    Him:
Did apologies and admit it was his fault.
Was about 50 meters from a perfectly good pedestrian crossing ( I look out for people randomly in traffic by buses and crossing but wasn't expecting some one to leap out from between two vans in the middle of the road.

Bike.. all good except for a scuff on my Brooks! which smarts more than anything else.

+1 Me too - if only to try and convince drivers that not all cyclists are thugs.

I think the vast majority of people are just lazy sods tbh. They're too lazy to move over, to actually manoeuvre their car more than a slight change of hand angle would entail.

And it's particularly frustrating when it's a bus that does it because those things cause a hell of a draught.
  • Agree with lost in thought and Coriander, any chance to show we are not thugs, also appreciate it when people take time to hold back etc, gets good reaction when you acknowledge this.

I too thank people you show a bit of courtesy and thought.

Imagine my horror when I heard a car hang back then as it came to overtake me in a safe place I raised a hand in thanks only to see it's a black Range Rover Sport with big alloys and tinted windows. I spent years perfecting my prejudices and irrational dislikes only to have this chap ruin it for me.

I have done that, waved thanks to someone only to see they are on the phone

  • You never can tell what a fellow cyclist on a day off from the commute will be driving... but a Range Rover sport?

Keep giving the thumbs up/wave etc, everyone's a winner.

well to counteract all this lovely road traffic, I had 5 pedestrians step out in front of me in the space of a mile, i just don't think they're looking where they're going ever. One of these day's i'm going to hit one of them.

Ah, but how many pedestrians did see you coming and waited courteously until you'd passed? Hmmmmmmmmm?

I've been knocked off twice at different junctions, both times it was their fault and they had simply made a mistake. They were both 'nice' people really horrified at what they had done. It was easy to forgive them at the time, and the police decided to take no action.

Neither of these people were 'out to get me', but ultimately I think it was wrong for the police to let them off so easily. They should have been given a careless driving charge shouldn't they? They had after all driven carelessly and caused an accident.
