Advice on XC bike

Howdy!
I'm looking for a HT XC bike that enables me to ride comfortably upright (no, not like a devout Jehovah's Witness), and doesn't have me crouched over the bars racer style.
The position doesn't have to be too vertical, but I don't want to steer the bars with me finger tips!
Price range is a whooping £500.
Any advice?
