Hi guys,

Quick question, I have a Trek 1.5, I got this year in april, done me very well, I am considering getting a boardman carbon under the c2w scheme as it will work out costing me under £600, pennys!

Im wondering if its worth it over the 1.5? Ill be using the 1.5 as a winter hack if I go for the new bike, but will there be a notable improvement between the two bikes?

Cheers guys

why not :) looks a great bike for the money and keep the other one or start using it now as a winterhack :)

you looking at the standard black model or the LE white?

it won't be a 'notable' improvement though - it just isn't "that" much better than the trek.

you trek is a £600 bike isn't it? - sorry but you won't even notice the difference - it won't be that much lighter nor will it have much of a better groupset or wheels - it will be carbon, but that isn't the be-all or end-all.

i'll just quantify that a bit further actually.

I had a trek pilot 1.2 which cost £600 - probably similar spec to your 1.5 - Tiagra based, bonty SSR wheels etc. I did a couple of upgrades - tiagra HT2 chainset, better brakes etc.

then last year I put together a posh bike for myself - S-Works roubaix, centaur groupset, Eurus wheels - this has since been upgraded to record group (exc chainset) and real 'luxury' items such as cinelli neo morphe bars and open-corsa tyres. In todays economic climate it would cost over £3600 at RRP

as much as I love the S-works - it is significantly lighter, more comfortable and has lovely feeling bars (seriously they are the best bit!) and a great feeling gearchange and groupset - but it is almost certainly NOT 6 times better - no way and actually the pilot (which is now my winter bike!) with 28mm tyres feels just as comfortable (stick 23s on it and it is all change right enough!)

so in summary - i honestly don't think you will see "that" much of a difference between the two
  • Oh, Well I already have some upgrades for the trek that I have picked up cheaply from different sites (Ultegra 6600 front & rear mech, 6600 casette, and an FSA Carbon Crankset (thanks CRC) and FSA Carbon handlebards, (again thanks CRC) and plan on popping either 105, or matching 6600 STI leavers onto that. I might stick with the trek then, and pop some better summer wheels on, as I have spotted the Dura Ace 7850 CL,s which would come in at the same as the boardman!

Take a look at the Pro Carbon if you can. It's a fair bit lighter with an improved groupset.
