What is the point of these mudguards?

Every cover of a bike magazine I have seen recently seems to have one of these front mud guards on them,
Is there an actual benefit to these mud guards or are they a bit of a poser thing to make it look a bit more like a motorbike .

I have been using one for a week now, normally just use a normal crud cratcher, this seems to work a better, I like It.It's not a ornament, so ride It0

I have the latest editions of WMB, MBUK and Singletrack and its not on there. Never seen one before :roll:Niner Air 9 Rigid

I do have to admit that when I put It on, I stood back and did think that looks a little odd. But It functions well and I am now used to the look so It's stayingIt's not a ornament, so ride It0

i'm getting one for crimbo0

Stops the cack that is flung forward which you then ride into. I'm using a Shockboard at the mo as i'm more bothered by the dog funk getting on my face!0
-
Example: Find a steep and winding country road that's had cows and sheep on it, crapping for all their worth, when it's raining heavily. Ride through that at full speed with knobbly tread tyres - I'll guarantee you'll get a face splattered with crap.
Neogaurd type designs and downtube crudcatcher designs are useless in a situation like that, you might as well not bother. The only thing that works is a design that juts out over the front wheel and physically stops the crap coming up and over the top - like the Shockboard (which is excellent btw).0 -
It's like a shockboard, only more complicated, less effective and considerably more stupid looking I think after years of pretending that under-tube mudguards are effective, Crud still aren't quite ready to do a crown-fit guard but this is a pretty ropey halfway step.Uncompromising extremist0

Well It's staying on now until It breaks, It works well today put It to a proper test, lots of mud and rain and It held up.It's not a ornament, so ride It0
-
It doesn't look too bad in the pic, I'm sure it will be quite effective. Does it rattle against the headtube on the rough stuff?Niner Air 9 Rigid
