edited October 2009 in MTB buying advice
My wheels are starting to get pretty tired, the spokes are starting to fatigue and I have trued the rear so many times, its starting to get out of shape. I was looking at Hope 2 on DT EX5.1Ds, but I've heard they are a little soft.. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Full Sus Spesh Enduro, mostly off-road, XC and DH.

Budget is sub £300-350

I have the 5.1 hoops and they're fine. If I bought them again today I'd go for teh flows though for tubless ready goodness.

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day

i dont think they are soft, ive landed on them from 6 or 7 foot up, the rear mech took out two spokes when i landed and the rim barely buckled.

if you are wandering whay happened, the local idiots hired to finish the table top jumps at Brechfa didnt finish the last jump properly and its about a metre and half too short-all i saw was the landing dissapearing behind me, then landed so hard i almost had whip lash-wasnt happy with that, especially as i was ridning with the track builder and he didnt warn me!
Dont look at it-ride it! they are tools not f*cking ornaments

I bought the Hope Pro2/5.1 hoops last year. Mainly ride black/red trail centre stuff up here in 7stanes land and not had any probs with them, plenty strong enough. But I wouldn't buy again for one small annoying reason......they are a real pain to get tyres on/off.

definately not the 5.1s then - I like being able to get tyres on and off with my fingers - what are the stans like for fitting tyres. I sent back a set of DTs earlier this year cos I couldn't get the tyres on and off without steel levers.

Its more dependant on the tyre, the technique, and the temperature to be honest. But I didn't have any problems fitting tyres on my 355s.

What is the difference between the flows and the 355?

The max width tyre I can ever see me wanting is a 2.1, apart from my slicks I recon 1.5 is the min. So 355 are probably better for me?

The 355 are fine, i'd personally save the weight.

Sounds like the 355s would be better then.

+1for the rims, just got them in white with blue pro 2s for my pitch and they are so stiff and lights. Shame my tires weigh a hell of a lot more than the full wheel

Discontinued at Wiggle but also available at CRC for £760 a pair  A hard plastic tube to eliminate pinch flats apparantly but the guy who reviewed them, gave them 2 stars, I bet he's gutted if he paid that price for them.

  • YOU'VE BEEN SERIOUSLY MISINFORMED!
I've been spanking a set of Hope Pro 2's on DT 5.1D's for 3 years now...they've pulled me through some seriously bad landings without a whimper and they frequently get blasted through gnarly rock gardens and down some of the roughest hillsides u'v ever seen...defo not "soft" & I'm no flyweight!
The hubs are "future-proofed" & super reliable, although the freehub aint the quietest, but then it saves having a bell and/or sayn "'scuse me" 2 the wide people all the time!
Tyres are tight on and off, but not problematically so (couple of good non-metal levers do it everytime 4 me)...check ur technique!...or buy that nu Weldtite foolproof removal tool.
Tyres seat very well on the rims
You should also get a few extra decals, spare spokes & hub adaptors for Maxles
