Which is the most desirable?
And which is the cheapest you would get without sacrificing function?

Taa

edit: whats the difference between the 426 and the 454 besides £50?

  • 426 is listed as having Uturn though! lol.

I'm well confused by all these numbers!

426 have a steel steerer where the 454 is aluminium - you save a bit of weight (about 3oz I think). Also to 426 has an internal floodgate adjust where the 454 is external. And I think I'm correct in saying that the 454s are all air sprung.

454 Air U-turn is the dogs nards, love mine to bits.

read the specs on Srams webby.

    it tells you.

nah you can get 454 coil Uturn :)

I am on the sram webby, just I dunno what most of the stuff means/does!
Plus its all 2010 stuff, am looking at 08/09 :)

onlything I can see different in the listings is the steerer as dave said.

Air's are too expensive, like £400!!
  • They don't make the 454 air anymore due to the Revelation being increased to 150mm travel.

I had a set of 426's loved them to bits and soooo smooth and plush, with the 20mm maxle they're virtually indestructible.

there is no real difference in the specs over the years.

you have 3 levels 409-426-454 low to high and each level has 3 options. coil uturn, air u turn and then dual air heavy to light.

things to look at are the flood gate is it internal (tooled in 2010 speak) or external.

  • ahh ok then....

So what does the floodgate do then? I take it that its easier to adjust if its external, but I cant see what it actually does on the RS webby!

download a manual and read

it sets the blow-off level for the lockout.

Having external adjustment is no major boon, the only reason to go for the 454 is so save weight although i doubt that is a priority for the Surge!

    I have the 426 coil uturns (07 I think)

as far as I can tell the only diff between the coil 426 and coil 454 uturns was some weight. The 426 floodgate can be (easily) adjusted from the saddle so I do't know what improvement the 454 could have made (my 426 did not have any sort of pop/push lock though, for whatever that's worth on such a fork).

I went with the 426 as I couldn't see the added value in a little bit of lost weight in what, at the end of the day, is still a very lardy fork

    426 pike rocks though!

then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day
  • I have the coil u-turn 426 fork (08 I think). The only difference between the 426 and 454 in the coil version is as above, 426 has steel steerer and solid crown, 454 has alu steerer and hollow crown for weight saving.

Both have a lock out system on the right leg, and on top of this it has a floodgate setting which means when running lockout you can have the option to have some travel if you take a hit or forget to turn it off when you go downhill.

All seem to have a wee problem with leaking oil out of this floodgate system however, TFtuned say they can fix, mine started to leak after a bad landing on a drop.

Can't say that's happened with mine. They've been perfect from day 1.

  • Think it's mainly an issue with the coil forks, I know i've heard totems and boxxers have this problem at times too, it's more annoying than serious though.

i had this problem on a brand new set of 09 duel air revelations.

bottomed out forks and it turned the floogate head seal inside out and it blew all the oil out. had to strip floodgate cartridge and reseat seal and refill with oil, been fine ever scince. the only thing that could of caused it is too much oil in from factory.
  • Well I had set on some cheap dual air 454 second hand, but my domains are back to working order :)

Sorry for wasting peoples time... but... I might still have a look at some cheap ones anyways :)
