Well, being a (relatively) fresh commuter last year, I hadn't given it much thought.
So, 5th November dawns, I am cycling to work, no bother at all.

However, hometime was a whole new experience. The Trolls had got up and were full of the Buckie, and playing with fire. And there I am, high viz jacket, all sorts of lights on, glowing in the dark. The Trolls wanted me to glow more though......

It was like the first day of the Somme, it was Shock and Awe on Maryhill Road....

The build up has started already, with various rockets and bangers going off, a sort of distant guns approaching, it will only build up to the 5th.

Thinking I may take the train, or go stealth, black clothing and no lights....

Anyone else get the same?

  • I had one of those wee 50p fireworks that all the school kids buy thrown at me last year. Although, they never really go where you want them to, so it just went down the road a bit and gave up with a pathetic pop.

I find that around Bonfire Night it is almost as bad as when it snows. The constant threat of little pr*cks throwing things at you passes your mind every 200m.

I'd say stealth is the way to go though, regarding the whole hiding from neds thing.

The week of November 5th is the only week of the year I don't cycle or drive. I'm usually too druged up on pills to be safe to do either.

I'd not thought about that to be honest, so it's good that you pointed it out, might be like you say, a day not to ride.

I remember a few years ago driving somewhere on Bonfire night and some idiots were in a car coming the other way. Aside from the driver, they were all piled over to the side of the car on the pavement side, and had the rocket launcher tubes out of the windows. They were then launching rockets at anyone and anything as they drove along. That's the kind of crap you have to watch out for.

Why is that..... does it bring back an attack of the Shell Shock from your participation in the Battle of Jutland?

  • My Great-Grandfather was a doctor at Gallipoli.

Whenever anyone mentioned Churchill or he had to refer to him he would never refer to him by name but say "That mass muderer!"

Aye, a few bad decisions, but then again he didn't start it. Its just a pity bad decisions in that game costs hundreds if not thousands of lives.

Oh don't worry about it. I've learned to live with it. The worst week is in Janurary which falls at the time I was out there, but November 5th isn't fun with all the fireworks popping off. Just have to prepare NGale for the fact that I will be more difficult than usual to deal with.

NGale always wonders why I don't wear my green beret with my working rig, Bosnia is the reason why.

Never mind we have to move on from these things, life goes on for the rest of us.

Result!!! Off to London for a couple of days next week, and will miss the 5th November Maryhill run. I can put away the tin helmet for another year.

Bonus is that I will be flying back on the evening of the 5th, so cloud permitting should have a great show all up Britain.

Still, will be plently of dodging bangers between now and then....
