Different riding disciplines

Hi all
I'm very new to biking and although I'm learning lots from this site I still in the dark on some areas. I doI knowthat there are various different types of riding but can anyone clarify what each discipline actually involves eg how does trail riding differ from XC, what does freeriding actually mean, is DH just going from the top of a (presumably steep) hill to the bottom etc
Cheers
Jim

DH is getting down a steep hilll as fast as you possibly can whereas Freeride (FR) is doing massive drops and jumps.
Slopestyle is abit like dirt jumping but going that one stage further.0 -
I still get confused by it all
whats 4x?0 -
A sort of fast dirt jumping.
4 people race together on a short track with doubles, tabletops, berms.
And they are racing going down a hill.
EDIT - Watch this video to get the idea

Down Hill = Riding a usually short, steep DH track against the clock. Riders take it in turns to attack the course whoever is fastest wins.
Free Ride = Similar to DH but without the clock
XC = Riding up, down and along on a variety of trails and surfaces, if racing, then its timed.
Dirt Jump = exactly that, jumping singles, doubles, table tops usually on a purpose built dirt jump track performing aerial tricks
Slope Style = like dirt jumping but with more drops, north shore sometimes with bigger obstacles/courses
Trials = Tackling a variety of obstacles (rocks, rails, buildings, trees), clearing them without dabbing your foot on the ground
4X = Riders line up in a gate and race around a bmx-style track for a number of laps whoever finishes first wins
AM = All Mountain like XC but with a higher level of difficulty and consequently danger.
my brain hurts now.0 -

Are there events for all mountain? It didn't exist last time I was into mountain biking, is it just a new label for old fashioned mucking about on trails?0

Enduro races?0

Street riding, big mountain...?
The list goes on. Its getting a bit silly really. Like Paul 8v said, what happened to just mucking about in the woods?? :roll:http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=12613038Cat With No Tail wrote:Anyway, fk dis, I iz off 4 a ride innit. l8rz peepz0 -
it can always be argued that its all just mucking about on bikes cos when you boil it down that's all it is...
but these terms exist, have a meaning and apply to different types of bike too (although many blur the boundaries)0 -
I've just read the mint sauce comic in this months MBUK, kind of hits the nail on the head for me0

Not sure how to get the comics up, this site has them but it hasn't got the latest on there yet.
