HI all,my 14 month meta 552 needs its parts upgraded , mostly due to the fact that the cheap original components have not got on very well with mendip mud. Im looking at replacing wheels, brakes ,bottom bracket, and drive train, also i would like to shave weight from the bike . Any advice would be much appreciated , my budget is around £1000

your wheels and brakes have worn out in the mud?
  • not exactly worn out , had trouble with the hubs and spokes, thinking about upgrading the brakes from juicy 5s to something better,.

what issues are you having with juicy 5s?
  • Pad wear , sticky pistons , im just not that impressed with them . one person i ride with suggests upgrading to formula R1 s , light weight , reliable ,with great stopping power in his opinion , im not sure , and after reading lots of reviews i dont know what to do for the best

Go for Hope Pro 2 on Mavic 719 rims for the wheels. While your at it upgrade the rear axle to bolt through and get rid of a bit of flex from the back end.

Drivetrain SLX/ XT hollowtech 2 BB

Formula always well reviewed for brakes but i`ve never used them.

I think IIRC the standard bars are quite heavy, maybe worth looking into.
  • Thanks for the advice , hope whhels look a good option, do you have any ideas on how to save weight, am i going to waste my money by changing the bars ,seat post etc etc to carbon?

I think your seatpost is an ibeam, in which case there probably won`t be much weight to lose there. As I said I "think" the stock handle bars are fairly weighty. You can save a lot with lighter tyres too.

Have a look at the owners club:

Plenty of good advice on there, but you`ve got to remember that the Meta frame is no lightweight so it`s never going to be a race machine.

I've been lucky with brakes, Avid, Hope, and Shimano have all been fault free for me, but I do prefer the lever feel on my Saint brakes to anything else I've tried.
