just sort of going back to my previous postman (striking workers) thread anyone want to be a binman for £19,000 a year ???

Most of the jobs i've had have been a sackful of sh*t, so being a binny would be a step up! (yes I've been made redundant twice in the past three years through no fault of my own, just pee-poor companies that have closed down).

Like most of these jobs, if they have not been privatised, they are under huge pressure to do more for less as iss everybody these days.

It has been calculated that each bin man lifts 12 ton pers shift, working non stop.

You don't see many older bin men and the injury rate is significant.

Couldn't comment on the money but would you really want to do it?

I've got a mate who left his job working for the council doing the recycling lorries in the morning, and left to be a hospital porter because he hated the working conditions and saw it as a step up from what he did before. Go figure!

People seem to conveniently forget the early starts when they quote "1pm finish time" , also conveniently forget that this involves hard work rather than sitting a desk posting on BikeRadar all day when you should be working (you know who you are !!)

gently wheel more like, no lifting of anything needed these days, our bin men dont even wear gloves

Fair point, wheelie bins do make life easier and safer for the bin men.
If you do end up getting a job as a bin man, though, watch out for any unwanted Gene Hunt-style treatment from The Bin Police....even though they don't exist outside of Richard Littlejohn's hard disk.

Hi i did this job many years ago when bins had no wheels and had to be lifted it was hard dirty work yes you could finish early if you moved yourself and you earned your early dart ,the best thing about the job was the people you worked with all human life was there like the french forein leagion.ps my spelling has not improved

Worked on the bins years ago in the summer holidays. Good craic. The binmen used to find all sorts thrown away that could be re-used, usually electrical goods. Massive porn stash in the tip hut as well, some of it sticky. Don't think it was yoghurt thrown in the bin after it though! :shock:
