change ultegra to compact

I am off to gran canaria and want to replace a 39/53 with a compact chainset
Current one has ultegra sl group - hollowtech2 bb & 10 speed 11-25 cassette

Must I replace with shimano (and is 105 compatible) or is there any other good value option as not much £ available

I guess chain needs to be shorter and is it better to get another cassette or can I swap back and forward with same cassette

Should be a straight swop, should be no reason to change the cassette unless you think you need even lower gearing. If you keep the same cassette you might need a link or two out but if you fit a larger rear cassette(12-27) you might be able to use the same chain.

Yes, FSA,Sram and others should be ok, not sure about Campag but I'm sure others have and have risked a severe beating from Tifosi!
