It's now the time of year to get bike lights sorted out. On a budget I was thinking of using a couple of flashlights for bike lights. They look bright enough. I have a few torches already that shine a bright light. I also have mini maglites. I recently strapped a cave type head torch to my bike that i used only once. It was powerful and wide but don't know the battery life and if it be cost effective.

I was thinking cheaper flashlights like the Aldi's that not aimed at bike market for a cheaper way to get a powerful enough light.

Is this a bad idea? How do they compare to proper bike lights and there battery life?

Cheers.

Tesco do a 1 Cree torch for £7 or £8 - bright enough for most conditions
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos
  • Thanks. but really want brighter like 3W Cree from within the UK for a good price. I need good road lighting approx. 180-250 lumens for unlit roads. 1W is equal to approx. 80 lumens.

The Tesco cree is pretty good but the MTE P7 from dealextreme takes some beating, but dealing with DX takes serious patience.
  • If you are buying a torch from DealExtreme, I personally would not buy the bike mount that they sell. I did, and the thumb-lock thing snapped off. To be fair I was trying to fit the torch as close as possible to the middle of my tapered handlebar. I've since ordered the twofish cycleblock, hopefully I'll have more luck with that.

You do indeed need patience - I think my order took 3 weeks or so to arrive.

DX have been great for me - 10 days or less for my last order.

If you cant wait that long - check out the Fenix torches. £40 or so - but very well made and waterproof completely.

Get the lock block mount to put it on too - oh and check out the long running What Lights thread on the MTB Buying advice forum too.
