Shame really but i need a compact.
I have a Campagnolo crankset(no idea what model) with 52/42 chainrings. The BB sure looks to be cartridge with a square taper. I like to fit a cheaper compact such as FSA . I heard there is compacts for square taper(can't find yet.) Will i have any issues fitting one? Would the BB only accept Campagnolo cranksets? I heard talk of 111mm with Campagnolo but don't know what that refers to exactly. Is it referring to the BB spindle?
There is a hexagonal bolt underneath the allen key screw cup. What size socket wrench do i need to remove it?
I am quite happy to upgrade the BB - only if i can keep the cost down.

Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0

what SD said. Square taper Campag compacts are fine.
111mm is the BB axle width
The crank bolt is usually a 14mm

for a how-to-do-it. Don't grease the tapers!Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
Thank You.
I was going for 10 spd but i now going to settle for the cheaper 9 spd.
Are you saying Campagnolo are all 111mm or just some? What are the chances mine is 111mm on my older bike? All it says on the crankset is Campagnolo Brevet(patent).
Are cheap cranksets really nasty or ok? I seen some in the sale for that price, hoping i get a bit better crankset.
Can i not fit a FSA to that BB do you think?0 -
Do you have a link to the FSA one?
If the BB is old, it may be worth replacing anyway - you can pick up square taper BB's quite cheaplyCarlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0 -
Well i found some reduced FSA compacts on CRC but not square taper. I also remember finding a Campag Veloce one.
So is my spindle ISO? that's not fully compatible with JIS.

Sounds like i'm just best upgrading the BB as well.0 -
Campag = ISO
Shimano/Stronglight/newer TA/FSA/Middleburn = JIS
I'm no Campag guru, as i don't use the stuff*, but AFAIK only the top end double chainsets run 102mm axles, the rest run 111mm. Triples are longer still.
*apart from their CT mechs, which are the best compact front mechs IMO.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -

I remember reading the certain Campagnolo groupsets have different spindle lengths. The problem is i don't know which group my crankset belongs to.

I was interested in getting a specific compact FD which is what Campagnolo do!
If i stick with Campagnolo, I be buying at the cheap end. I don't want to be stuck with them.0 -

Hmm - i'd go for an external BB chinaset - probably one of the FSA ones from chainreaction
I recently got an FSA 'omega carbon' (which isn't really carbon at all but carbon wrap) - for £39 including the BB - OK it's a 19mm axle when everyone has now agreed on 24mm as the std - but seeing as it came with the BB for that price I wasn't too concerned.
it'd be a bugger to get the xenon chainset now only to find that your BB packs in in a few weeks and needs replaced and double the price of the whole job when you could have got a decent chainset and external BB now for less money (if you see what I mean)0 -

oh and as JOhn says - these are external BB - the ultra-torque bit - but it isn't really a full BB you need in addition to the crankset as the crankset itself comes with the bearings - you just need the 'cups' to fit it to - which are around £12 on their own.

Sorry abit confusing. I know not square taper, i was showing all the cheaper Campagnolo and what i could get if i upgraded the BB and kept with Campagnolo.0 -
Good to know you get a BB with those cranksets and you just need the cups.
The FSA omega carbon doesnt' sound the best quality, the teeth are soft someone mentioned.
I go with the Xenon for now and stick with the BB.
Thanks alot for your help.0
